Palexpo
Palexpo (also marketed as Geneva Palexpo ) is a large exhibition complex near Geneva . It is located on the territory of the commune of Le Grand-Saconnex , next to Geneva Airport and Highway 1 .
investment
Palexpo consists of seven halls with an area of 102,000 m 2 and usable outdoor space of 21,000 m 2 . Six halls are located next to each other, only separated by mobile walls, so that they can be used together as a large, continuous room of 84,000 m 2 . The most recently built Hall 6 has the special feature of being built above the A1 motorway. The very elongated Hall 7 extends between the motorway and the airport area; it is separated from the Geneva Arena concert hall , which has up to 9,500 seats, only with a mobile wall .
Under Halls 1 and 2 there is a congress center with a hall with 2200 seats and seven smaller halls. The Villa Sarasin , located right next to Hall 1 , a mansion from the 19th century, offers exclusive reception and seminar rooms.
Palexpo is served by a wide variety of modes of transport. It is 500 m away from the airport building and the Genève-Aéroport train station (terminus for all long-distance trains that travel from Switzerland to Geneva), has its own motorway exit and is served by bus lines 5, 28 and Y of Transports publics genevois .
history
Palexpo is the successor to the old Palais des Expositions in the Plainpalais downtown district . This was built in 1926 for the Geneva Motor Show . After the Second World War, other fairs were also organized there, such as the Salon des arts ménagers and, from 1971, Telecom .
Construction of the Palexpo began in 1978 and the first four halls with 58,000 m² were inaugurated on December 18, 1981. The Palexpo was then expanded three times, in 1987 with Hall 5, in 1995 with Hall 7, and in 2003 with Hall 6 built above the A1 motorway.
Until June 2008, almost all of the buildings were owned by the Fondation du Palais des Expositions , the foundation under public law that already managed the old Palais des Expositions in Plainpalais. The exception was the last hall 6 built, which was owned by the public law foundation Fondation pour la halle 6 . Since 1957 the old Palais des Expositions and then the Palexpo have been run by the Orgexpo Foundation (Organization d'expositions) .
The two foundations were merged in June 2008 to form Palexpo SA , the majority owned by the Canton of Geneva . Since January 1st, 2009, Palexpo SA has also taken over the operation of the Palexpo from Orgexpo.
