Laver Cup 2017 in Prague

The Laver Cup is an international tennis tournament for men that takes place two weeks after the US Open every year, with the venue rotating. It took place for the first time from September 22nd to 24th 2017 in the O 2 Arena in Prague . The competition is named after the Australian tennis legend Rod Laver . In addition to the inaugural bonuses, which are awarded based on a player's respective world ranking position, each member of the winning team receives US $ 250,000 in prize money. No world ranking points are awarded. Initially, it was planned to pause the tournament in the Olympic years. Because of the great success of the tournament, it was decided to hold it annually. The tournament has officially been part of the ATP Tour since 2019 .

The 2020 event in Boston has been postponed by one year to the period from September 24th to 26th, 2021 due to the scheduling conflicts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic .

Competition mode

Six top European players challenge their competitors from the rest of the world in the competition. Twelve games (nine singles and three doubles) are played within three days - three singles and one double every day - with one point more being awarded for a win on each day. Each player plays one or two singles, and at least four of the six players play doubles, each pairing may only exist once. All games are played in "best-of-three" mode. If the first two sets are even, a match tie-break occurs . If it is 12:12 at the end of the encounter, two pairs of doubles play a match tie-break for the tournament victory. Former professionals Björn Borg from Sweden (Europe) and John McEnroe from the United States (rest of the world) were hired as captains for the first three years. Both have agreed to be available in 2020.

Roger Federer's management company TEAM8 , the Brazilian businessman and former Davis Cup player Jorge Paulo Lemann and Tennis Australia are jointly organizing the Laver Cup.

qualification

Four of the six players on a team qualify directly for the Laver Cup thanks to their world ranking position. To do this, the captain chooses two further players (“captain's pick”). On August 24, 2016, Rafael Nadal announced that he would take part in the Laver Cup. On June 29, 2017, Dominic Thiem also agreed to participate in the Laver Cup. On August 3, 2017, Jack Sock was appointed to the Rest of the World team by John McEnroe.
