Basler Volksblatt

The Basler Volksblatt was a Catholic newspaper that appeared in Basel , Switzerland from 1873 to 1982 .

The Basler Volksblatt was founded in 1873 as part of the Swiss Kulturkampf . The aim of the weekly newspaper was to promote the unity and solidarity of the Catholic population in the largely reformed and liberal Basel. It was the first time that a diaspora newspaper appeared in Switzerland . It developed into a combative paper and went over to the daily edition in 1890.

The circulation of the newspaper rose from an initial 1,000 to over 8,000 copies at the beginning of the 20th century. The increasing competition in Basel with finally five daily newspapers and the waning denominational differences gradually threatened the existence of the Basler Volksblatt, which had meanwhile become the CVP organ . After first attempts to collaborate with other Catholic newspapers, in 1982 (last print run 9,600) a merger with the Catholic Northern Switzerland , which continued the title Basler Volksblatt in the subtitle. This newspaper was also received in September 1992 (last circulation 11,000) and was taken over by the bourgeois Basellandschaftliche Zeitung .
