history

precursor

The intrepid Rauracher is considered a forerunner of the bz . In the subtitle, this paper describes itself as “a Swiss, truth-loving paper for religion, sensible popular law and enlightenment”. It was founded at the time of the separation of the Basel cantons . This civil war was also a "paper war", which at first was mainly fought with leaflets. That changed in January 1831: The Baseler Zeitung appeared for the first time in Basel . Three times a week this paper tried to contain the revolutionary movement in the countryside with one-sided articles. In response to this, the land clerk Benedikt Banga bought a printing press with which he published the paper Der intrepid Rauracher from July 1, 1832 . The newspaper did not increase its circulation to more than 600 copies and had to cease operations after five years.

The Banga und Honegger company had already printed several other newspapers beforehand. In the meantime, up to six newspapers appeared side by side in the Basel area. Many were printed by Banga and Honegger, often changed their names and soon died again. In 1853 only three newspapers were published in Baselland : Landschäftler , Bundesfreund and Baselbieter . Over time, these three papers came into opposition to the government. One reason for this was the construction of the railways, which the Basel government pushed ahead with little consideration for landowners, expropriated land and destroyed farmland.

Founded in 1854

Since the ruling party no longer had a majority in the district administrator at the time and, for the first time since the canton was founded, had no newspaper support, well-known men decided to found the Basellandschaftliche Zeitung (bz) in order to oust the other papers in the canton. They communicated this intention to the book printers Lüdin & Walser, who published the Federal Friend, and demanded that the two should give up their newspaper. At first they refused, but then the editors bitterly agreed to do so. On July 1st, 1854, the bz . This gave the political establishment a newspaper with which to address the people. Despite the criticism and challenge of the other papers, the new organ was able to establish itself permanently.

The Basel newspapers were party leaflets at the time, which was particularly evident in the elections to the National Council of 1854: each of the three newspapers proposed two candidates, which they supported during the election campaign. The bz fought for the candidate Stephan Gutzwiller and justified his position in the Federal Assembly in several statements. It was suspected that Gutzwiller wrote these lines himself, although they were written in the third person. At that time the authors rarely gave their articles a name.

Development in the 20th century

At the beginning of the 20th century, the bz had a circulation of 6,000 copies and, after a steady increase, reached 20,000 copies in the 1980s. 1992 took over the bz the northern Switzerland . This Catholic newspaper was anchored in the Bernese Laufental and had a heavy deficit. Until the takeover of the coat az Nordwestschweiz (at that time Mittelland-Zeitung ) in 2006, which also includes the Aargauer Zeitung , the Limmattaler Zeitung , the Solothurner Zeitung , the Grenchner Tagblatt , the Zofinger Tagblatt and the Oltner Tagblatt , the bz carried the name Nordschweiz in the subtitle. Since January 2012, bz has published the edition for the Basel area as a header with the name bz Basel . This represented an attempt by the bz to make the content of the Basellandschaftliche Zeitung more palatable to the population of the canton of Basel-Stadt, who after Christoph Blocher's takeover of the Basler Zeitung were at best easier to win over to a new newspaper, but were not willing to to read a newspaper from the rural canton with the appropriate title. As a result, the bz increased its circulation in the canton of Basel-Stadt from 4,000 copies (2012) to 13,000 copies most recently (2019).

In 2008 - almost two years after being taken over by AZ Medien - bz adapted its logo to the design of the titles held by AZ Medien. The Gothic font and the characteristic «Baselbieter red» disappeared from the logo.

From September 2007 to February 2017, the Sunday newspaper Switzerland appeared on Sunday (until 2013 Sunday ) as the seventh edition of az Nordwestschweiz and thus the Basellandschaftliche Zeitung . Since March 4, 2017, az Nordwestschweiz has been issuing an expanded weekend edition on Saturdays for the association's newspapers under the name Schweiz am Sonntag .

In 2018, AZ Medien brought the Basellandschaftliche Zeitung and the other newspapers in its possession from the az Nordwestschweiz association to the CH Media joint venture founded with the NZZ-Mediengruppe , which is owned equally by both groups. The joint venture also includes the regional newspapers of the NZZ media group St. Galler Tagblatt and Luzerner Zeitung as well as the radio and TV stations of both companies and other business units. CH Media went into operation on October 1, 2018. A name change took place on July 8, 2019. Instead of the two headers Basellandschaftliche Zeitung bz and bz Basel , the newspaper only appeared under the name bz - newspaper for the Basel region , resp. usually only under the abbreviation bz . After the economic independence was given up in 2006, the name that had existed since 1832 was also given up.
