Roger Blum (born January 6, 1945 ) is a Swiss historian , journalist and media scientist and ombudsman for SRG German-speaking Switzerland .

Life

Roger Blum grew up in Liestal and studied history and constitutional law at the University of Basel . After obtaining his licentiate in 1971, he was assistant to Herbert Lüthy until 1974 . In 1976 he received his doctorate with the dissertation "The political participation of the people in the young canton of Baselland (1832–1875)". After that he was primarily active as a journalist: 1978–1980 he headed the domestic section of the Luzerner Neusten Nachrichten , from 1981–1985 he was domestic editor for the Tages-Anzeiger . From 1985 to 1989 he was an editor-in-chief of the same newspaper. From 1989 until his retirement in 2010, Blum was Professor of Media Studies at the University of Bern .

From 1991 to 2001 he was President of the Swiss Press Council . From 2008 to 2015 he was President of the Independent Complaints Authority for Radio and Television (UBI). In 2016, he took over from Achille Casanova as the ombudsman of the SRG German-speaking Switzerland. He resigned from this office in 2020.

Roger Blum was also politically active: from 1971 to 1978, he was a member of the district administrator (parliament) of the canton of Basel-Landschaft for the Free Democratic Party (FDP) .

He is married to the journalist and communication scientist Marlis Prinzing for the second time . Blum has two children from his first marriage.
