Achille Casanova (born October 2, 1941 in Zurich ; † July 17, 2016 in Bern ) was a Swiss journalist , Vice Chancellor and Federal Council spokesman.

Achille Casanova grew up as the son of a PTT employee. He attended elementary school and high school in Lugano . He studied law and economics at the Universities of Bern and Friborg and graduated in 1967 with a licentiate . To finance his studies, he worked from 1962, among other things, for the Swiss dispatch agency and for Italian-language radio and television . After completing his studies, he worked from 1971 as a parliamentary correspondent for Italian-language television. Thanks to his multilingualism, he was able, for example, to conduct interviews with newly elected federal councilors in three languages.

In 1981 Achille Casanova was elected Vice Chancellor with responsibility for information, language services and the staff of the Federal Council. In August 2000, he was appointed first Federal Council spokesman. He resigned at the end of July 2005. Oswald Sigg became his successor.

In 2005 Casanova received the Oertli Prize "for his commitment to multilingual Switzerland, for the personable and credible way in which he embodied the multilingualism of Switzerland at the highest level in the country".

From 2005 to 2016 he was the ombudsman of the SRG and during his term of office handled around 2000 submissions on radio and television broadcasts by Swiss Radio and Television (SRF). He was followed by Roger Blum in April 2016 . From 2006 to 2016 he was President of the Stiftung Internationale Stiftung Preis E. Balzan Fund .

Achille Casanova was married with two children and lived in Bern. He was a member of the Christian Democratic People's Party (CVP) . He died in July 2016 at the age of 74 after a serious illness.
