Otfried Jarren (born November 9, 1953 in Neumünster ) is a German communications scientist and full professor at the Institute for Mass Communication and Media Research at the University of Zurich (IKMZ).

Life

After studying at the University of Münster (until 1978), he was an assistant at the Free University of Berlin (until 1987) and professor of journalism at the University of Hamburg . In 1997 he was appointed to Zurich, but at the same time remained director of the Hans Bredow Institute for Media Research at the University of Hamburg until July 2001 . Jarren has made a name for himself in German-speaking communication studies through work on communication and media policy and political communication .

Since August 2008 Otfried Jarren has been Vice President Humanities and Social Sciences and a member of the University Management of the University of Zurich.

In November 2012 he was elected by the Federal Council as President of the 15-member Federal Media Commission, which is to advise the Federal Council and the administration on media issues from mid-2013. After the resignation of Rector Andreas Fischer on November 6, 2013, Jarren temporarily headed the University of Zurich until Fischer's earlier-elected successor, Michael Hengartner, took office at the beginning of February 2014.

In May 2018 Jarren received the 2018 Schader Prize . Acceptance of the prestigious award is linked to acceptance into the Senate of the Schader Foundation .
