Andreas Fischer (English studies)

Andreas Fischer (born January 25, 1947 in Basel ) is a Swiss Anglicist . The full professor of English philology was Rector of the University of Zurich from August 2008 to November 2013 .

Life

Andreas Fischer studied English , German and art history at the universities of Basel and Durham , England, and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. In 1981 he completed his habilitation in English Philology at the University of Basel . Andreas Fischer has been a full professor of English philology at the University of Zurich since 1985.

Andreas Fischer was appointed Rector of the University of Zurich on August 1, 2008. Before that he was Dean of the Philosophical Faculty and Vice Rector for Humanities and Social Sciences.

He is editor of the Swiss Papers in English Language and Literature , a member of the Advisory Board of the Journal of Historical Pragmatics , the Institute for the Historical Study of Language at the Department of English Language at the University of Glasgow and a member of the Zurich James Joyce Foundation . As a representative of the University of Zurich, Andreas Fischer was on the Board of Trustees of the Swiss Finance Institute , which is supported by the University of Zurich together with other universities and institutions and in which the previous “Foundation Banking and Finance at the University of Zurich” has been integrated.

On November 6, 2013 Fischer announced his immediate resignation as rector of the university after criticizing the dismissal of the deputy director of the medical history institute Iris Ritzmann in the Mörgeli affair . The molecular biologist Michael Hengartner had already been elected as his successor in June 2013 . He took up his post on February 1, 2014, in the meantime Otfried Jarren took over the management on an interim basis.
