The Swiss Finance Institute (SFI) is the national competence center for basic research, doctoral training, knowledge exchange and further training in banking and finance in Switzerland. The SFI's mission is to create knowledge capital for the Swiss financial center.

Organized as a foundation , the institute is one of the most important knowledge pools in the Swiss financial center and was created in 2006 from a joint initiative of the Swiss financial sector, six leading Swiss universities and the Swiss Confederation.

organization

The institute was founded in 2005 under the leadership of the Swiss Bankers Association in the form of a foundation based in Zurich and with start-up capital of 75 million francs. The Swiss Finance Institute started its work at the beginning of 2006 with the aim of maintaining the top position in the Swiss banking and finance industry. The SFI is the only national competence center that brings together first-class researchers from six partner universities from all over Switzerland under one roof. The SFI faculty includes a total of over 50 professors from: the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne , ETH Zurich , the University of Italian Switzerland , the University of Geneva , the University of Lausanne and the University of Zurich .

The foundation is supported by the banks in Switzerland, the SIX Swiss Exchange , the Swiss Confederation and partner universities. The Board of Trustees is accordingly composed of personalities from business and science. In addition to top managers from the most important Swiss banks, these include Christian Schwarzenegger , Vice President of the University of Zurich , Nouria Hernandez, Rector of the University of Lausanne and Boas Erez, Rector of the University of Italian Switzerland . Romeo Cerutti, General Counsel at Credit Suisse , and Vice-Presidents Axel P. Lehmann, President UBS Switzerland and Member of the Group Executive Board, and Romeo Lacher, Chairman of SIX Group Ltd. and Julius Baer Group Ltd., hold the office of Chairman of the Foundation Council Bank Julius Baer & Co. AG.

The institute was headed by Jean-Pierre Danthine until he took office as a member of the three-person Executive Board of the Swiss National Bank at the beginning of 2010 . He had already headed the “International Center FAME for Financial Asset Management and Engineering” for nine years as one of the three predecessor organizations of the SFI. Between February 2011 and October 2016 the institute was headed by Claudio Loderer . François Degeorge has headed the Swiss Finance Institute as Managing Director since November 2016.

activity

The basic research of the SFI faculty forms the foundation for new financial ideas and a breeding ground for innovation. Since its inception, the more than 50 SFI professors have published over 100 banking and finance articles in the world's best scientific journals such as the Journal of Finance , Journal of Financial Economics , Review of Financial Studies , American Economic Review , Econometrica . These can also be found in the database of the Social Science Research Network (SSRN) in New York. In addition, they convey their research results in courses to students at bachelor's and master's level as well as doctoral students at SFI partner universities and to a broad audience in public workshops and advanced training courses.

By disseminating knowledge, the SFI brings the value of basic research to bear and enables the development of promising talent. Our events, workshops, publications and training courses expand the skills of all players in the financial center. The SFI professors impart the latest knowledge in banking and finance to students at Bachelor's and Master's level as well as doctoral students at SFI partner universities. We promote the exchange of knowledge between practitioners and researchers. Researchers receive timely feedback on their projects and practitioners have direct access to the expertise of the SFI faculty. In addition, through its wide range of activities, the SFI helps to inform the Swiss public about how the financial sector works. The SFI also operates one of the largest finance doctoral programs with currently around 100 students from all over the world.
