overview

The Swiss education system knows different universities : Universities (UH), technical colleges (FH) and teacher training colleges (PH). As part of the Bologna Process , the courses at all universities were converted to Bachelor and Master courses .

Since many questions of education policy in Switzerland are regulated by the cantons, coordination is primarily carried out by the following bodies, which perform tasks that are performed by the education ministries in other countries:

  • The Swiss University Conference (SHK) is the highest higher education political body. It takes account of the Federal Constitution, according to which the federal government and the cantons jointly ensure coordination in the Swiss higher education system. The SHK meets as a plenary assembly or as a university council.
  • The Swiss Agency for Accreditation and Quality Assurance (AAQ) carries out institutional accreditations in the Swiss higher education area. These procedures are a prerequisite for the right to use one of the three protected designations - "University", "University of Applied Sciences" and "University of Education". AAQ is subordinate to the Swiss Accreditation Council.
  • swissuniversities - the rectors' conference of Swiss universities - maintains a register of recognized universities in Switzerland, which is maintained by the information center for recognition issues ( Swiss ENIC ).

The cantonal universities and the two federal technical universities are designated as universities. Furthermore, 4 university institutions, 9 technical colleges, 18 art and music schools, 15 pedagogical universities with various sponsorships and three other institutions are recognized.

In Switzerland there are seven cantonal or intercantonal universities of applied sciences , which are subdivided into further sub-universities as well as a privately owned university of applied sciences and a university of applied sciences institute.

The legally enshrined equality of men and women goes hand in hand with the work of women and equality officers at universities and colleges, who represent gender equality interests throughout Switzerland in the KOFRAH (French: CODEFUHES).
