The University of Applied Sciences Eastern Switzerland ( FHO ) is the amalgamation of the four universities in Eastern Switzerland to form the University of Applied Sciences Eastern Switzerland.

history

The cantons of Zurich (resigned September 30, 2014), Schwyz, Glarus, Schaffhausen, Appenzell Innerrhoden, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, St. Gallen, Graubünden and Thurgau, as well as the Principality of Liechtenstein, run the Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences, which has been developing since 1995. The basis for the creation is the agreement on the FHO of September 20, 1999. The central body is the FHO's technical college council . By resolution of March 7, 2008, a director and advisory board members were appointed.

The FHO Fachhochschule Ostschweiz is definitely recognized as an institution by the Federal Council with a resolution of April 2, 2008. The courses offered at the four universities are in the fields of technology, information technology, construction, planning, economics, tourism, social work and health.

Dissolution and reorganization

The University of Applied Sciences cannot be institutionally accredited in its existing legal form according to the new Federal University Promotion and Coordination Act of January 1, 2015. The planned merger to form a university of applied sciences did not materialize. The previous University of Applied Sciences in Eastern Switzerland will be dissolved. The University of Applied Sciences in Chur (HTW Chur) will leave the association on January 1, 2020 and will continue to exist as an independent University of Applied Sciences in Graubünden . The Canton of Graubünden hopes that this will give it more independence. In September 2019 the HTW Chur changed its name to FHGR University of Applied Sciences Graubünden. It will start on January 1, 2020 as the eighth independent university of applied sciences in Switzerland under public law.

In a new agreement in June 2019, the cantons of St. Gallen, Appenzell Innerrhoden, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Thurgau, Schwyz and Glarus as well as the Principality of Liechtenstein have agreed to lead the new University of Applied Sciences in Eastern Switzerland as the successor to the three St. Gallers FHO sub-universities agreed. The Cantonal Council of St. Gallen unanimously approved the government council model of a university of applied sciences with a rector at three locations. Under a university council, a rector is to lead the OST with six departments at the three locations. The founding rector is Daniel Seelhofer . The operational start of the new OST - Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences is set for September 1, 2020. The FHO will guarantee the courses and diplomas until the OST is accredited (planned for the end of 2022).
