The University of Education of the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (PH FHNW) offers training and further education for all teaching professions from pre-school to upper secondary level and qualifies specialists in the areas of speech therapy and special education. It is one of nine universities of the Northwestern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences (FHNW) and is supported by the Swiss cantons of Aargau , Basel-Stadt , Basel-Landschaft and Solothurn . The PH FHNW offers teacher training that is recognized throughout Switzerland by the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Directors of Education (EDK) .

Locations

The FHNW University of Education is represented in three cantons with locations on the Brugg-Windisch campus, the Muttenz campus and in Solothurn.

Institutes

The PH FHNW is divided into six institutes, which are spread over the three locations:

  • Institute Kindergarten / Lower School (IKU) in Solothurn, Muttenz and Brugg-Windisch
  • Institute for primary level (IP) in Muttenz, Brugg-Windisch and Solothurn

The PH FHNW employs over 680 people who train over 3,300 students and supervise over 41,000 teachers in further training courses. Sabina Larcher has been the director of the PH FHNW since September 2015. Her predecessor was Hermann Forneck.

history

The PH FHNW was created as part of the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland on January 1, 2006. It emerged from the merger of the Aargau University of Education, the Solothurn University of Education and the Basel School of Education and Social Work (HPSABB).

Founding dates of the pre-organizations:

  • 1822: Opening of the Aargau cantonal teachers' college
  • 1845: Foundation of the school teacher seminar in the canton of Solothurn
  • 1873: Foundation of the teachers' college in the canton of Basel-Stadt
  • 1966: Foundation of the teacher training college in the canton of Basel-Landschaft

Vision and strategy

Teachers and educators have a strong influence on the performance and skills of learners. Today's public school therefore demands targeted support more than ever. For the PH FHNW as a professional university, this means: teaching on the pulse of practice and research - and excellent teaching in studies and further education. Continuing education is consistently committed to lifelong learning, iterative education. Lifelong learning means further development, especially in a (knowledge) society that is characterized by change and change. The research reports of the PH FHNW offer an overview of the research and development activities at the university. The projects are based on the professional field of school and teaching and focus on the institution and organization of the school on the one hand and pedagogical didactic action on the other.
