The University of Education Bern (PHBern; Engl .: Bern University of Teacher Education ) is the training center for teachers in the Swiss canton of Bern . It has been operational since September 1, 2005 and was created by amalgamating various institutions for the training and further education of teachers. In addition to training and further education, the PHBern conducts research and development as well as media education and offers services. With around 2,600 students (as of 2017), PHBern is the third largest university of education in Switzerland.

The PHBern offers the following courses:

Different admission requirements apply depending on the course. The PHBern runs its own preparatory courses and entrance exams in order to introduce people without a high school diploma to study.

Together with the University of Bern , the PHBern also offers the Joint Master’s degree in Sports Didactics.

Research at the PHBern

The central tasks of the PHBern also include research, development and evaluation. The aim is to link research, teaching and school practice. The results of the research, development and evaluation projects support school and teaching practice and help to improve the training and further education of teachers. The research and development projects take place at all institutes and are coordinated by the Institute for Research, Development and Evaluation.

The research and development projects are financed with funds from the PHBern or third-party funds. In addition, PHBern carries out contract research and evaluations for third parties. Research results are made accessible to the general public and professional practice through various event formats and the publication series Contributions for Practice .

Structure and organization

The University of Education Bern is financially supported by the Canton of Bern, but is strategically and operationally independent. The canton specifies the scope and form of the offer. In addition to the training of teachers, the basic mission of the PHBern also includes the areas of “research and development”, “further education” and the area of ​​“media education”.

The school council is the strategic management body of the PHBern. The rector is responsible for the implementation of the strategy as well as for the operational operation of the PHBern.

In autumn 2015, 2,478 students were enrolled at the PHBern, 758 (31%) of them men. At the end of 2015, 1,106 employees shared 433 full-time positions.

In the 2015/2016 academic year, 825 teaching diplomas were awarded. In addition, 35,946 further training participants were counted.

Anniversary year 2015

In 2015 the PHBern celebrated its tenth anniversary. On a number of occasions, she gave her stakeholders and the public an insight into her activities.

In February 2015, the new school award 'EDUARD' was awarded for the first time (compound of 'Education' and 'Award'). It awarded three school projects from the Canton of Bern that dealt with the topic of exchange. The school prize is to be awarded every two years.
On the so-called 'Adventure Day' in May 2015, over a thousand children and young people visited the PHBern locations.
