The Friborg University of Education (PH FR) (Fr. Haute École pédagogique Friborg, HEP FR ) is a bilingual college of education at the tertiary level based in Friborg in the Üechtland in the canton of Friborg .

The university emerged in 2001 from the former cantonal teachers' seminar. It offers training for teaching staff at pre-school level and primary school as well as for secondary level and continuing education for teachers of all school levels. The university works together with the University of Freiburg . The Institute for Multilingualism was founded together with the Canton of Friborg and the Adolphe Merkle Foundation , and since 2010 it has been the national competence center for multilingualism . In addition, the competence center for aspects related to media and information technologies as well as communication technologies (ICT) was established.

The Freiburg University of Education has been accredited by the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Education Directors (EDK) since 2005 .

tasks

The Freiburg University of Education performs the following five core tasks:

  • Training of primary level teachers and introduction to the profession
  • Further training of the teaching staff
  • Research and development in education and training
  • Provision of teaching and learning materials for professional activities and training
  • Balance between the use of French and German in one's own institution

organization

The Freiburg University of Education is a tertiary level institution. It has the status of an autonomous public-law institution with its own legal personality, which is under the overall supervision of the State Council ( cantonal government ). He approves their regulations.

The PH commission controls, controls and advises the institution. It gives the canton's Education Directorate and the Grand Council a position on the budget, submits applications for administration, regulations, and the selection of department heads or the rector. It consists of 12 members, including representatives of the students and staff.

The board of directors is made up of the rector, the heads of departments for basic training and advanced training as well as research and services for third parties.

Four department heads are in charge of the respective departments. These are:

  • the French-speaking and German-speaking sections of basic training
  • the training and professional introduction
  • the research and services for others

The position of the rector is currently (March 2020) vacant after the departure of Katharina Mertens Fleury at the end of February 2020.

courses

The Freiburg University of Education offers its courses in French and German.

  • Training as a teacher at the primary school level (cycle 1 + 2) : With full-time study in 6 semesters, this training leads to the qualification for teaching for the entire primary school level and for all subjects and to the academic title Bachelor of Art in Pre-primary and Primary Education. This teaching diploma is recognized throughout Switzerland. The basic training course comprises around 15% in the other language. The training can also be bilingual and leads to a bilingual diploma (teaching qualification for both language regions and imparting skills for bilingual / immersive teaching).
  • Training as a teacher at secondary level I (artistic design / technical design / housekeeping). The course for the lower secondary level is based on an agreement with the University of Freiburg. Classes are held in German and French. The subjects can be a Bachelor of Arts (Ba_SI) or a Bachelor of Science (BSc_SI) with 50 or 30 ECTS (housekeeping or technical design) resp. 35 ECTS (artistic design) can be studied.
