The University of Agricultural, Forest and Food Sciences (HAFL) in Zollikofen ( Switzerland ) is one of six departments of the Bern University of Applied Sciences . The department's range of courses includes three bachelor's and two master's programs.

history

In 1964, 19 cantons found a concordat to sponsor the Swiss Agricultural Technical Center. The other cantons and the Principality of Liechtenstein will be added over the years. Under the direction of Fritz König as the first director, the new school was built and started operating in 1967. In 1976 the technical school is converted into a technical college (HTL). The duration of the course increases from four to six semesters. Six years later (1982) a new building was built, which is largely used by the Intercantonal Teaching Aids Center. Fritz König dies in office. Walter Küng becomes the new director. In 1992 the new specialization "International Agriculture" is introduced. Additions expand the school house and the boarding school and a tropical greenhouse is added. In the course of a revision of the Concordat, the name of the SLT is changed to the Swiss School of Engineering for Agriculture (SIL). 1995 Director Walter Küng retires. Alfred Buess is his successor.

In 1998 the SIL is recognized as a university of applied sciences institution and is organizationally affiliated with the Bern University of Applied Sciences. It is now called the Swiss University of Agriculture (SHL). In addition to the diploma training, applied research, services and further education are now part of the service mandate. In 2003 the new forestry course was introduced.

In 2007, the dairy food technology course was completely reformed and the equine sciences specialization was opened in the agronomy course . In 2009, the Concordat Council decided to dissolve the Concordat at the end of 2011 and to fully integrate the SHL into the Bern University of Applied Sciences. He approves the construction of a large extension to solve the acute space problems. In addition, the new master’s degree in life sciences will start operations.

In 2010, the Bern parliament approved the takeover of the SHL and the credit for the extension. In the course of full integration into the Bern University of Applied Sciences, the name was changed to the current name. The canton of Bern replaces the previous sponsorship.

After two years of construction, HAFL moved into the new extension in the heart of the campus at the beginning of the autumn semester. In 2013, director Alfred Buess retired. Magdalena Schindler Stokar took over the position.
