The Department of Economics, Health, Social Work at the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH-WGS) is one of the six departments of the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH) , a university of applied sciences in the canton of Bern in Switzerland .

Departments

The BFH-WGS department is divided into the three specialist areas of business, health and social work . It offers internationally recognized bachelor 's and master ' s courses as well as continuing education courses such as Master of Advanced Studies (MAS), Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS), Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) and Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA).

history

Department of Economics

In 1969, the HWV Bern Higher Business and Administration School was founded as a department of the Bern Commercial Vocational School. From 1988 onwards, in addition to full-time courses, it also offered part-time training. In 1993 the HWV Bern separated from the commercial vocational school in Bern and became independent under the sponsorship of the Commercial Association of Bern and the surrounding area. In 1998 the HWV Bern was affiliated to the Bern University of Applied Sciences as the University of Economics and Administration HSW Bern. In 2001 the Federal Council recognized its technical college courses throughout Switzerland. In 2003 the Bern University of Applied Sciences was reorganized and its sub-schools were grouped into six departments. The HSW Bern, the University of Social Work (HSA) and the Private University of Economics (PHW) newly formed the Department of Economics, Administration and Social Work. In 2005, the HSW was transferred to the business and administration department, and the bachelor's degree in business administration was launched. In 2006 the first bachelor's degree in business informatics began. In 2007 the business and administration department was cantonalized. In 2008, the body for accreditation and quality assurance of Swiss universities (OAQ) recognized the EMBA courses of the department. In 2010, the Federal Department of Economic Affairs (EVD) accredited the bachelor's degree in business informatics and the consecutive master's degree in business administration. In 2011 the name of the department was changed from “Business and Administration” to “Business”.

Health Department

In 1999, the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Health Directors (GDK) decided on a comprehensive reform of the health professions and in 2004 decided to offer training in physiotherapy and occupational therapy throughout Switzerland as a bachelor's degree at universities of applied sciences. In French-speaking Switzerland, all and in German-speaking Switzerland a certain percentage of diplomas in nursing should be offered at universities of applied sciences. In 2005, the governments of the cantons of Bern, Zurich and St. Gallen decided that German-speaking Switzerland would only offer training in occupational therapy (Zurich University of Applied Sciences, Winterthur) and nutritional advice (Bern University of Applied Sciences). In addition, the GDK decided that the training in nutritional counseling and midwifery should also become bachelor's courses at universities of applied sciences in the long term. The governments of the cantons of Bern, Zurich and St. Gallen decided to offer these training courses from 2007. In 2006, the first bachelor's degree in Physiotherapy and Nursing started in the Health Department of Bern University of Applied Sciences, followed in 2007 by the first bachelor's degree in Nutrition and Dietetics in Bern and the first bachelor's degree in Physiotherapy in Basel (cooperation with the Basel-Stadt Health Education Center). In 2008, the midwife bachelor's degree began in Bern. In 2009 the first bachelor students in nursing and physiotherapy completed their studies at the Bern University of Applied Sciences. In 2010, the first master’s courses in nursing and physiotherapy were started, and the Federal Department of Economics (FDEA) accredited the bachelor’s courses in nursing, physiotherapy, midwife, and nutrition and dietetics.

Social work department

In 1943 the sponsoring association Educational Center for Social Work Bern was founded. The evening school in Bern started in 1955 and the church school in Gwatt / Thun in 1965. In 1975 these two schools merged to form the United Schools for Social Work Bern and Gwatt (VSSA). In 1990 the VSSA achieved the status of a higher technical school for social work (HFS). 1992 was «dipl. Social Worker HFS »became a protected title, and a new modular training model was introduced. In 1998, the VSSA was affiliated with the Bern University of Applied Sciences as the HSA Bern University of Applied Sciences. In 2001, the University of Applied Sciences Social Work was recognized throughout Switzerland by the Education Directors' Conference (EDK). When the Bern University of Applied Sciences was reorganized in 2003, its sub-schools were grouped into six departments. HSW Bern, together with the University of Social Work (HSA) and the Private University of Economics (PHW), formed the Department of Economics, Administration and Social Work. According to the Bologna declaration, the Bachelor's degree in Social Work started in 2005 and the HSA was transferred to the Social Work department. In 2006 the social work department was cantonalized. In 2008 the consecutive Master’s degree in Social Work started.
