Master of Advanced Studies

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Master of Advanced Studies ( MAS ) is a degree in the tertiary further education area at university level , which is mainly used in Switzerland and Liechtenstein and occasionally in Austria , but also in Germany.

overview

The Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) is a non- consecutive Master’s degree, which is intended as further training for people with a university degree and relevant professional experience. Switzerland makes a clear distinction between undergraduate masters and advanced training masters. A Master of Advanced Studies is obtained as part of a postgraduate course at Swiss universities and technical colleges . In Switzerland and Liechtenstein, three types of continuing education diplomas are awarded:

  • Certificate of Advanced Studies ( CAS ) (Certificate Level)
  • Diploma of Advanced Studies ( DAS ) (Diploma level)
  • Master of Advanced Studies ( MAS ) or Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) (master's level)

In Austria , the MAS degree introduced in 1999 was not explicitly included in the 2002 amendment to the University (Studies) Act. Master's degrees as an academic university title , such as an MAS, can be obtained through successful completion of a university course, a course for further education, a university course or a course of a university nature. A completed degree is not a prerequisite for access to these extraordinary studies; mostly only several years of professional experience or the positive completion of an entrance examination are required. The master’s degrees in further education are therefore not identical to the master’s degrees due to the completion of regular studies (master’s studies), even if their titles have partly the same wording. For example, a Master’s degree in further education (e.g. MAS, MBA etc.) does not entail admission to a doctoral program.

In Germany , the MAS is classified as a “postgraduate degree program (PGS)” . In accordance with the resolution of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs on April 14, 2000, it can be held by specifying the university awarding it. In contrast to the consecutive Master’s degree , the MAS is about in-depth and specialization studies (formerly the post-graduate course NDS) with different levels.

Basics for a Master of Advanced Studies (MAS)

The Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) requires 60 ECTS points and includes a master's thesis . The MAS course can be completed in a minimum of 15 months, part-time in around 2 years. This corresponds to a workload of around 1800 hours. The prerequisite for admission is in many cases several years of professional experience and a degree from a university (university or technical college) or an equivalent qualification (e.g. diploma from a higher technical school or higher technical examination plus qualified work experience with managerial or departmental responsibility).

Example MAS study program (modular structure) at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences

Alternatively, the training in an MAS study program can also have a modular structure. A frequently encountered model is implementation using CAS modules, usually with ten ECTS points each. A CAS module usually lasts one semester and corresponds to a workload of around 280 hours. The program - usually 13 weeks on one day per week and an additional intensive week - allows for part-time studies. A DAS (Diploma of advanced studies) can be achieved with three CAS degrees (30 ECTS points). Five CAS, a master’s thesis and a university degree or an equivalent previous education are the requirements for the federally recognized MAS degree with 60 ECTS points.

tuition fee

The tuition fees for a Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) can reach over 29,000 CHF.

Recognition (Switzerland / Liechtenstein)

The MAS are recognized under federal law in Switzerland and enjoy title protection insofar as the course is federally recognized, which does not automatically apply to an MAS, otherwise it is a private business degree. The Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) replaces the post-graduate degree under the old law (NDS). For universities of applied sciences, the minimum requirements for post-graduate courses leading to a master’s degree and the definition of the corresponding titles are regulated by the federal ordinance "Degree courses, post-graduate courses and titles at universities of applied sciences" of September 2, 2005. In contrast to an M.A. or MSc, however, an MAS does not entitle you to pursue a doctoral degree at certain faculties at Swiss universities.

The two accreditation agencies AACSB and EQUIS are important for high and international recognition and accreditation of the (E) MBA degrees . In Switzerland, only the economics faculties of the Universities of Zurich and Lausanne , the International Institute for Management Development in Lausanne and the University of St. Gallen are accredited by EQUIS. When it comes to the recognition and accreditation of the (E) MBA degrees of the universities of applied sciences, the recognition of the Swiss Agency for Accreditation and Quality Assurance (AAQ) of the Swiss universities is important.
