The European Quality Improvement System ( EQUIS ) is a system for the accreditation of business schools that was introduced in 1997 by the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) in Brussels . The initiative was supported by the European Commission and was designed in cooperation with the existing national, European accreditation institutions; On the German side, this was initially the Central Evaluation and Accreditation Agency (ZEvA), later followed by the Foundation for International Business Administration Accreditation (FIBAA).

The aim of this initiative was to introduce a uniform, European quality standard for business schools that would meet international standards that have long been in place in the USA; they were set there by the AACSB , which was founded in 1916 .

Scope of business school accreditation from AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA

EQUIS accreditations are not granted permanently, but only for a period of three or five years for the purpose of continuous review of quality standards and must then be renewed.
