history

On October 31, 2002, 25 German companies and associations founded the university with the aim of establishing an international management school in Germany. After the companies initially brought in 65 million euros when they were founded, when ESMT Berlin ran into financial difficulties in 2010, they shot a further 60 million euros into the foundation fund. The money is invested in a similar way to American universities in order to use the profits to fill gaps in the budget of ESMT Berlin. Since then, the university has posted a black zero every year .

In October 2003, the Berlin Senate approved ESMT Berlin as a private academic university. In December 2013, ESMT Berlin received the right to award doctorates for five years from the State of Berlin. The Berlin Senate also extended the state recognition of ESMT Berlin for a further ten years. Since 2008, the university has been participating in the Berlin Doctoral Program in Economics and Management Science (BDPEMS), which has been part of the Berlin School of Economics since 2019. The university is a member of the Global Network for Advanced Management (GNAM) and the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD).
