The Bard College Berlin - A Liberal Arts University , formerly European College of Liberal Arts (ECLA) is a fully accredited university in Berlin offers, interdisciplinary study programs in the humanities and social sciences. It is part of the American Bard College . The curriculum combines classical education with a critical consideration of contemporary challenges. Students come from more than 40 countries and the language of instruction in all programs is English. The study programs can be completed with an American and at the same time with a German Bachelor of Arts degree (BA).

history

The college was founded in 1999 as the "European College of Liberal Arts"; it was the first institution in Germany to offer a degree in Liberal Arts . The founders were Stephan Gutzeit, Anne Sliwka and Olaf Amblank , who wanted to create a “campus university for generalists”. The first Bachelor program was introduced in 2009. Since 2011, Bard College Berlin part of the American Bard College . In July 2015 Florian N. Becker and Taun N. Toay were appointed managing directors. The sponsor is the "Bard College Berlin, A Liberal Arts University gGmbH ".

Bard College Berlin currently offers the following "programs":

  • BA in Humanities, the Arts and Social Thought (4 years)
  • BA in Economics, Politics and Social Thought (4 years)
  • the Academy Year (one-year program for first-year students)
  • the Project Year (one-year program for advanced students)
  • the Arts and Society in Berlin program (one-semester program for students interested in art and theater studies in Berlin)
  • the Begin in Berlin program (semester program for students who are enrolled at Bard College in the USA and want to start their studies in Berlin)
  • the LAB Berlin program (semester program for students who are enrolled at universities in the USA and Canada)

In 2016 the Program for International Education and Social Change was introduced at Bard College Berlin. The program enables students from regions affected by economic, social and political crises to study liberal arts at Bard College Berlin on the basis of full scholarships. This is based on a long tradition at Bard College.

The course includes various forms of encounter and engagement with the metropolis of Berlin, including museum visits, courses on history and culture, internships and voluntary work. Student exchange and study opportunities abroad include the Bard network of partner universities and study programs in Kyrgyzstan, Palestine, Russia, Hungary and the USA (Annandale-on-Hudson, NY; New York City). Bard College Berlin is also part of the ERASMUS network with partnerships in France and the Netherlands.

The college is institutionally accredited in Germany by the Science Council (since January 2017), recognized by the Berlin Senate (since 2011) and in the USA by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). The BA in Humanities, the Arts and Social Thought and the BA in Economics, Politics, and Social Thought were accredited by ACQUIN in autumn 2013 and autumn 2015, respectively. The bachelor's degree at Bard College Berlin is designed for eight semesters and comprises 240 ECTS points.

Bard College Berlin's campus

The college has a green campus in Pankow- Niederschönhausen in the north of Berlin. The dormitories are in close proximity to the campus. Most of the buildings were built in the 1970s and used to belong to embassies from several countries in the GDR (including Cuba, Egypt and Nigeria).
