Bard College , founded in 1860 as St. Stephen's College , is a private university in Annandale-on-Hudson , New York State .
history
John Bard was the grandson of Doctor Samuel Bard , who founded Columbia University's medical school . John Bard's uncle was Rev. John McVickar, professor at Columbia University.
In the 1940s, Bard College was a refuge for emigrants from Europe, including Hannah Arendt , Stefan Hirsch , Felix Hirsch , Emil Hauser , Hans Marchand , Werner Wolff and Heinrich Blücher .
Bard College is an independent, non-denominational college. It offers Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees in 35 academic programs . A five-year BS / BA course in economics and finance is also possible. In a five-year study program at the Bard College Conservatory of Music , students can earn a Bachelor of Music degree and a BA in a complementary subject.
The university has branches in several countries, including Bard College Berlin in Germany .
