Norman Manea (born July 19, 1936 in Burdujeni , Suceava ) is a Romanian writer who lives in the United States.

Life

In 1941 Manea was deported as a Jew to a Romanian concentration camp in Transnistria , which he survived with his entire family.

Manea worked as a hydraulic engineer. He made his debut at the age of 30 in an avant-garde magazine. In 1974 he settled in Bucharest as a freelance writer. He described life in a totalitarian regime without criticizing the communist regime directly. In his story The Trenchcoat , he lets the reader feel the oppressive atmosphere of the Ceaușescu dictatorship and describes how the suspicion of being spied on by the other poisons relationships with one another.

In 1986 he left Romania for political reasons. After a year in West Berlin , he moved to the USA . His essay Felix Culpa. Mircea Eliade's memory and silence about anti-Semitic thinking Mircea Eliade and its proximity to fascism sparked a smear campaign against him in post-communist Romania in 1991. In 1997 and 2008 he visited Romania. The 1991 murder of the Romanian exiled Ioan Petru Culianu from the University of Chicago, who had proven Mircea Eliade to have a fascist orientation, is treated indirectly by Manea in his novel Die Höhle (German: 2012).

Manea lives in New York City and is Professor of European Studies and Culture at Bard College . He publishes regularly in the magazine Sinn und Form . His works have been translated into a total of twenty languages.
