Roman Weilert (born July 15, 1979 in Kemerovo , Russian SFSR ) is a German ice hockey player who has played as a defender for Moskitos Essen since the 2010/11 season .
Career
Roman Weilert grew up in Khabarovsk in the Asian part of the Soviet Union, where he learned to skate at the age of three . He played ice hockey for the first time at the age of five and was accepted into the HK CSKA Moscow ice hockey school at the age of 15 . Three years later, the Russian- German Weilert and his family moved to the Federal Republic of Germany as part of the late repatriate program and found a new home in Bayreuth . Therefore, he began his career with the Bayreuth Tigers , for which he first stepped on the ice in the senior division in the 1997/98 season . In 1999 his father got a job as an oral surgeon in Duisburg and the family moved there. The Kölner Haie signed Roman Weilert and provided him with a license for the Ratinger Ice Aliens , so that he played his first games in the German Ice Hockey League early on . At the same time he gained experience in the major league for Ratingen. In the summer of 2000 he took part in an ice hockey camp in Canada with Dimitri Pätzold , Vitali Stähle and Lutz Klauck .
A year later the cooperation partner of the Haie changed and Weilert entered the Oberliga Nord with a license for the Füchse Duisburg . In the following two seasons he was then under contract with the second division club from Weißwasser , before moving to league rivals Eisbären Regensburg . In three seasons for the polar bears he was on the ice in over 150 games and scored seven goals and 28 assists .
In 2006/07 , the then 26-year-old moved to Heilbronn despite better offers from the 2nd Bundesliga , where he met coach Rico Rossi , whom he knew from his time as coach in Duisburg. Rossi said of Weilert at the time: “Roman is a reliable and stable defender, but he also has the eye and the technical skills for the deadly offensive pass. It will also be placed in the power play. "
Together with the Falken team, Weilert was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga, but he no longer played a role in Rossi's squad planning, so he opted for a contract with the Dresden Ice Lions. Jan Tabor, manager of the Eislöwen, says about the newcomer: "With Roman Weilert an experienced player from the second division Heilbronn comes to us, who has always shown solid performances and can certainly take over the role of Rudolf Wolf ." In the following season he reached with the ice lions winning the league championship and promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga. In the summer of 2009, the now 30-year-old signed a contract with the upper division EHC Dortmund for one season, before joining the Moskitos Essen in 2010.
