Dimitri Paetzold , actually Dmitri Andreyevich Petzold ( Russian Дмитрий Андреевич Петцольд ., Scientific transliteration Dmitrij Andreevič Petcol'd ; * 3. February 1983 in Ust-Kamenogorsk ) is a German professional ice hockey goaltender who in Kazakhstan was born and since January 2020 for the EV Landshut plays in the DEL2 .
Career
Pätzold, born as a Kazakh German and raised near the Kazakh-Chinese border, came to Germany at the age of 13 as a repatriate . There he was discovered by the scouts of the Kölner Haie , with whom he was henceforth used in the youth teams. In 1999 Pätzold received his first assignments for the DNL team of the KEC. Shortly afterwards, the goalkeeper was also part of the DEB selection for the 2000 Junior World Cup for the first time .
In the 2000/01 season the goalkeeper made his first appearances for the DEL Haie team as a substitute for Andrew Verner and Joseph Heiss . However, he spent a large part of the season with a sponsorship license with cooperation partner TSV Erding and with the young sharks. In the 2001 NHL Entry Draft , Pätzold was finally selected in the fourth round in 107th place by the San Jose Sharks . At the end of the 2001/02 season he celebrated the German championship with the KEC as a substitute goalkeeper behind Chris Rogles . The left catcher then moved to Adler Mannheim for a year before moving to North America.
From 2003 to 2006 Dimitri Pätzold played for the Cleveland Barons , the Sharks' farm team , in the American Hockey League and was named the best young goalkeeper in the league in his rookie season . In addition, some missions in the ECHL for the Johnstown Chiefs were added in the 2003/04 season . During the 2005/06 season the goalkeeper was for the first time in the NHL squad of the San Jose Sharks, as the two goalkeepers Yevgeny Nabokow and Vesa Toskala were injured. Pätzold took the post as number 2 behind Nolan Schaefer , but was not used. After the Cleveland Barons moved to Worcester at the end of the 2005/06 season , Pätzold has been playing for the Sharks' new farm team, the Worcester Sharks , in the AHL since the fall , where he and his German compatriot Thomas Greiss and partly with the Canadian Nolan Schaefer formed the goalkeeper trio. On March 4, 2007, the goalkeeper was reassigned to the NHL squad, where he took the post of back-up goalie for a game. After the elimination of his team in the first round of the AHL playoffs in 2007 , the German national coach Uwe Krupp nominated him for the ice hockey world championship in Moscow as the third goalkeeper.
In the summer of 2007, Pätzold signed a new one-year contract with the Sharks and was given preference over Thomas Greiss to the post of substitute goalkeeper behind Nabokow after Vesa Toskala had been transferred to Toronto after the San Jose Sharks training camp held in September. In the third game of the season, Pätzold made his NHL debut after 48 minutes played in the last third, but did not play a game from the start until mid-January 2008 when he was sent back to the farm team. Back at the Worcester Sharks, the German international managed his first shutout since the 2004/05 season . It was also the first shutout in the franchise history of the Worcester team. After the season he was appointed to the world championship squad , as was the case a year before . His expiring contract in San Jose was not extended by the team, whereupon Pätzold accepted an offer from Vitjas Chekhov from the Continental Hockey League . In the 2008/09 season , the goalkeeper was only used once in the first 16 games of the season. He moved to Germany in mid-October 2008 to join the Hannover Scorpions , with whom he signed a contract until the end of the season. With the team he finished the main round as the second best team behind the Eisbären Berlin and advanced in the playoffs to the semifinals. For the 2009/10 season , however, Pätzold had already signed a two-year contract with league rivals ERC Ingolstadt . After a year in Ingolstadt, his contract was dissolved, the goalkeeper then switched to Bavarian competitor Straubing Tigers , where he signed a one-year contract. After two years in Bavaria, he returned to the Hannover Scorpions for the 2011/12 season and received a two-year contract. After the contract expired, the Scorpions' DEL license switched to the Schwenninger Wild Wings , which also took over Pätzold from the Scorpions.
For the 2016/17 season , Pätzold switched from the Schwenninger Wild Wings to the Straubing Tigers . In the 2017/18 season he was only the third goalkeeper behind Sebastian Vogl and Drew MacIntyre at the Tigers and was therefore handed over to the Krefeld Pinguine in November 2017 , who in turn needed protection in the goalkeeping position. Due to strong performance in the 2018/19 season , the Krefeld team extended his contract for another year.
In January 2020 he left the Krefeld club for professional and family reasons and moved to the EV Landshut in the DEL2 .
