Nolan Kelly Schaefer (born January 15, 1980 in Yellow Grass , Saskatchewan ) is a former Swiss - Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who, among other things, made seven appearances in the National Hockey League for the San Jose Sharks. His older brother Peter was also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Nolan Schaefer, who has Swiss-German ancestors, began his career in junior leagues in his home province of Saskatchewan before going to Providence College in the US state of Rhode Island in 1999 . There he played for their ice hockey team. After his first season in Providence, he was selected in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft by the San Jose Sharks in the fifth round at position 166. He stayed in college for three more years.

From the 2003/04 season he played for the farm teams of the Sharks, the Fresno Falcons in the ECHL and the Cleveland Barons in the American Hockey League . In Cleveland he formed the goalkeeper team with the German Dimitri Pätzold until the summer of 2006, when the team was relocated . However, Schaefer did not have much success with the team. In his first year he made it to the playoffs , but they failed to qualify in the following two years.

In the 2005/06 season , the San Jose Sharks suffered at the beginning particularly from their bad luck with the goalkeepers. First goalkeeper Yevgeny Nabokow was injured and only a few games later substitute goalkeeper Vesa Toskala was injured . Schaefer was appointed to the NHL squad immediately after Nabokow was injured and came on for the first time when he was substituted on for the injured Toskala. Schaefer took the post as the regular goalkeeper, his teammate from Cleveland, Dimitri Pätzold, the role of the back-up goalkeeper.

Schaefer was allowed to play five times in a row from the start and impressed across the board. He suffered only one defeat and had his best game with a 1-0 shutout win in extra time against the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim . After Nabokow and Toskala were ready to go again, Schaefer was sent back to the AHL, but returned several times during the season to San Jose. In total, he came in the season on seven appearances in the NHL and achieved a goal average of 1.88.

In the summer of 2006, the Cleveland Barons relocated to Worcester and became the Worcester Sharks . With Dimitri Pätzold and Thomas Greiss , Schaefer formed the goalkeeper trio for much of the season. But since Pätzold and Greiss convinced the management so much because of their performance, Schaefer was sent to the Hershey Bears at the end of January to collect more match practice. Despite the move, he remained the property of the San Jose Sharks franchise and sat in several games for the San Jose Sharks as a back-up goalie on the bench when Vesa Toskala was injured. Shortly before the end of the transfer period on February 27, 2007, he was transferred for a seven-round draft pick to the Pittsburgh Penguins , who sent him straight to their farm team, the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins in the AHL. There he was able to convince with good performances, but the Pittsburgh Penguins did not extend his expiring contract.

Nolan Schaefer therefore signed a contract with the Minnesota Wild in the summer of 2007 , but could not prevail in the NHL squad and completed the season with the Wild Farm Team, the Houston Eros , from the AHL. There he played together with Barry Brust and together the goalkeeper duo won the Harry "Hap" Holmes Memorial Award for the fewest goals conceded.

In the 2009/10 season Schafer went on the ice for HK CSKA Moscow in the Continental Hockey League , but returned to North America in July 2010 and was signed by the Boston Bruins. On September 21, 2011 Schaefer signed a contract for the 2011/12 season with HC Ambrì-Piotta from the National League A with an option for two more years. Finally, Schaefer stayed with the Leventines until 2014 before moving to league rivals SC Bern . In 2015, he won the Swiss Cup with the city Berners . After the 2014/15 season , Schaefer announced his resignation.

At the Cleveland Barons, Schaefer holds the franchise records for the most shutouts (7), most games won (43), and the lowest goals against goals against during a season (2.34) and the most shots saved during a season (92.5% ).
