Swiss Cup (ice hockey)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Swiss Cup in hockey is a cup competition, which since the 2014/15 season will be played again. There was already a cup competition in Swiss ice hockey between 1957 and 1966, and the record winner with three titles was HC Neuchâtel Young Sprinters .

The reintroduction of the competition after 48 years has been planned by the Swiss Ice Hockey Association for a long time and finally decided in 2013. The competition is officially called the Swiss Ice Hockey Cup .

format

32 teams fight for the trophy in a total of five rounds in the knockout system . All 12 teams from the National League A , 10 teams from the Swiss League and 10 teams from the Swiss Regio League (MSL or lower) will be there. The 10 starting places in the Swiss League stem from the fact that when the cup was relaunched there were only 10 teams in the NLB at that time. Since the mode has never been adjusted since then, the last two teams in the Swiss League (the qualification from the previous year is decisive) cannot participate in the SIHC. The teams in the Swiss Regio League have been qualifying since the 2016/17 season.

The 12 teams of the National League and the four best teams of the Swiss League (qualification from the previous year) are seeded in the draw for the first cup round. The teams are also divided into regional groups during the first round draw. From the second round onwards, all teams are divided into the same pot, so any club can meet any opponent, regardless of league affiliation and geographical considerations. In each round, the lower-class team is awarded the home advantage.

Events

The record winners are the HC Neuchâtel Young Sprinters and the ZSC Lions , each with three titles. A cup winner was able to successfully defend his title twice, on the one hand the HC Neuchâtel Young Sprinters in 1958, on the other hand the Zürcher SC in 1961.
