Andrew "Magic" Verner (born November 20, 1972 in Weston , Ontario , Canada ) is a former Austrian - Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who has worked for the Cape Breton Oilers , EHC Lustenau , Kölner Haie , Hanover Scorpions and Newcastle Vipers during his career has played. He ended his career in 2010 with the Sheffield Steelers .

Career

Verner began his career in the 1989/90 season with the Peterborough Petes, a team of the Ontario Hockey League . At the NHL Entry Draft 1991 he was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the second round in 34th place , but could never prevail in the National Hockey League .

In the 1992/93 season he moved to the American Hockey League for the Cape Breton Oilers. In 1994/95 he was appointed to the Canadian national team and played several games in various international tournaments. In 1995/96 he moved to Europe. After a brief engagement with the Austrian first division club EHC Lustenau , he played for HPK Hämeenlinna in the Finnish SM-liiga in 1996/97 , where he was named Player of the Month in November 1996. In the 1997/98 and 1998/99 seasons he played for the Malmö Redhawks in the Swedish Elitserien , before moving to the DEL to the Kölner Haien in 1999 . He ended the 1999/00 season as the best goalkeeper. After two years with the Hannover Scorpions , he moved to the Austrian record champions EC KAC for the playoffs of the 2002/03 season . In the 2003/04 season, the team won the 28th championship title with him. In the 2004/05 season he injured his adductors and was out for several months. The NHL experienced Dan Cloutier was brought in to replace him, but he was also injured in the final series. Verner played the last two games himself despite his injury not healed, but the EC KAC was runner- up behind the Vienna Capitals .

Due to the no longer convincing performance in the 2006/07 and 2007/08 seasons, the EC KAC announced after leaving the playoffs in mid-February 2008 that it would no longer extend the contract with Verner. The goalkeeper signed a contract with the English first division club Newcastle Vipers in June 2008 , where he also wanted to prepare his coaching career and act as assistant coach. He moved to the Sheffield Steelers just a year later , where he ended his career in late July 2010.

particularities

Verner managed the rare feat as a goalkeeper to score a goal in the 2005/06 season. On January 27, 2006, the EC KAC's EBEL game against HC TWK Innsbruck was 3-2 when the Innsbruck team took the goalkeeper off the ice shortly before the end and replaced it with a sixth field player. Verner shot the puck across the entire field into the orphaned goal.

Verner received the nickname "Magic" during his time in the DEL, where fans and the media dubbed him a "witcher" thanks to his incredibly quick catchhand reflexes. This name has been retained in the modified version "Magic" to this day. What is noticeable about the game is Verner's head and upper body twitching, which has now become his trademark. In autumn 2007 Andrew Verner was granted Austrian citizenship.
