Dan Cloutier (born April 22, 1976 in Mont-Laurier , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper and current coach . During his playing career, he played with the New York Rangers , Tampa Bay Lightning , Vancouver Canucks and Los Angeles Kings in the National Hockey League played. His brother Sylvain was also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Dan Cloutier was selected in the first round at position 26 in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Rangers . He played the following two years in the OHL and then moved to the New York Rangers farm team , the Binghamton Rangers , in the AHL . In the 1997/98 season he came to his first twelve missions in the NHL. In the following season, too, he did not get beyond the position of Mike Richter's back-up goalie . In the summer of 1999 he was transferred from the Rangers to the Tampa Bay Lightnings . There he was able to play his first season as number 1 in the 1999/2000 season. In February 2001 he was transferred to the Vancouver Canucks , where he made it to the undisputed goalkeeper. Cloutier achieved the greatest success with Vancouver in the 2003 play-offs when they moved into the second round.
Since the 2004/2005 season in the NHL was canceled, Cloutier played at the EC KAC in Klagenfurt , the Austrian record champions. The team made it to the final of the play-offs.
The first year after the lockout was not particularly positive for Cloutier. In November 2005 he suffered a knee injury in a collision and dropped out after only 13 completed games for the rest of the season. In the summer of 2006, the Vancouver Canucks signed a star goalkeeper in a transfer deal with Roberto Luongo . There was no more room for Cloutier in Vancouver and he was transferred to the Los Angeles Kings .
In Los Angeles he alternated at the beginning of the 2006/07 season with Mathieu Garon as a regular goalkeeper, but Cloutier brought significantly poorer performances, so that Garon was often preferred. Favored by a long injury-related loss of Garon, he got more Ice Age, but in mid-December 2006 he was the victim of a shoulder injury, but was only briefly out. But just two weeks later, he suffered another injury, this time on his hip. Shortly thereafter, he had an operation and was out for the remainder of the season. At the time of his failure, Cloutier was one of the worst goalkeepers in the league, with only six wins in 24 games, an average of almost four goals per game and a catch rate of 86 percent.
He was fit again for the training camp in September 2007, but was put on the waiver list after two weeks . After he was not signed by any other NHL team, the Kings sent him to the Manchester Monarchs , their farm team in the AHL. During the 2008/09 season Cloutier was without a club. It wasn't until December 2009 that he was signed by the Rockford IceHogs , but only stayed with the IceHogs until the end of the same month.
In the summer of 2010, the goalkeeper ended his active career and then worked as a goalkeeping coach for the Barrie Colts in the Ontario Hockey League.
criticism
- While Cloutier was able to achieve a good average goal conceded of around 2.4 goals per game and a catch rate of over 90 percent in the regular season, he had to accept an average of more than three goals per play-off game and achieved a catch quota of only 87.2 percent.
- Cloutier is considered to be combative and argumentative. During his time with the New York Rangers, for example, he called on the entire bank of local rival New York Islanders to a brawl after he beat up Islander goalie Tommy Salo . When he later played for the Tampa Bay Lightning, he was suspended from the NHL for four games because of a kick in the head of Islanders striker Tim Connolly .
