NHL Player of the Month
The NHL Player of the Month award has been presented since the 1987/88 season.
The first winner was in October 1987 with Alain Chevrier , the goalkeeper of the New Jersey Devils , a rather unknown, but the month after that a superstar was awarded with Wayne Gretzky . Two players shared this award three times.
In the seasons 2003/04 and 2005/06 one offensive and one defensive player were awarded. With 13 awards, Mario Lemieux is the most successful player ever. He is followed by his former teammate Jaromír Jágr , who has won nine times. Alexander Ovetschkin can look back on eight awards. In March 1990 Vyacheslav Fetisov was the first European to receive this award.
Since 1991, the best young player has also been named NHL Rookie of the Month .
