He has been a member of the Triple Gold Club since 2002 . He is currently the President of the Toronto Maple Leafs .
Career
Player career
Brendan Shanahan played in the Ontario Hockey League for the London Knights since 1985 and proved what potential he had. In two years he reached 154 points in 115 games. In the 1987 NHL Entry Draft , the New Jersey Devils were selected in the first round at position 2. In October 1987 he made his debut in the National Hockey League at the age of 18 . At the end of the season he came to 26 points and moved with the Devils for the first time in their history in the playoffs , where they advanced to the conference finals.
In the game year 1989/90 he came to 72 scorer points in the season. However, due to his very physical style of play, he also received many penalty minutes. He also let himself be carried away to one or the other fight on the ice.
In 1991 Shanahan signed with the St. Louis Blues . But Shanahan was a restricted free agent and the Blues had to compensate the New Jersey Devils. Usually such compensation is paid in the form of draft picks, but the Blues had already given the Washington Capitals four first-round draft picks for Scott Stevens . The blues offered Curtis Joseph , Rod Brind'Amour and two draft picks that could not have been used until a few years later. But the New Jersey Devils were more interested in Scott Stevens, so Shanahan came in for Stevens.
The first year in St. Louis brought Shanahan the consistent performance that he had already shown in New Jersey. In the 1992/93 season Shanahan really got going and set a new personal record with 94 points, which he improved to 102 points the following year.
The start of the 1994/95 NHL season was postponed because the NHLPA players' union , the league and the team owners could not agree on new salary modalities. Many players went to Europe to play ice hockey anyway. Brendan Shanahan moved to Germany to join the Düsseldorfer EG . But after only three games in which he scored five goals and prepared three, he had to return to the United States because the season could now begin. It was his last season in St. Louis.
In late July 1995 Shanahan was transferred to the Hartford Whalers in an exchange deal for Chris Pronger . He became captain of the team and scored 78 points. But the team missed the playoffs. He started the 1996/97 season with the Whalers, but after two games he was transferred to the Detroit Red Wings .
In Detroit he played a very good season, as one was used to from him, and he scored 88 points, the third best value of his career. In the playoffs, he had a large share of the Red Wings' first Stanley Cup victory since 1955 with 17 points . Nevertheless, the Red Wings were able to win the Stanley Cup again. In the 1998/99 season he could not improve compared to the previous year and Detroit was eliminated against arch rivals from Colorado in the playoffs.
In the following two years the old form returned and Shanahan scored hard again. The 2001/02 season should be a particularly successful season for Shanahan. In February 2002, he won the gold medal in the final against the US team with the Canadian national team at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City . Reinforced by Dominik Hašek and Brett Hull , the Red Wings played a very good season, which ended with the third Stanley Cup success since 1997.
In 2003 Shanahan was awarded the King Clancy Memorial Trophy for leadership and community engagement. Things didn't go as well on the ice as in previous years. He scored less and the Red Wings did not get past the second playoff round.
The 2004/05 season was completely canceled due to another lockout . Brendan Shanahan started the next season in full freshness. In 82 games, he collected 81 points, his best performance in nine years. Despite a great regular season for the Red Wings, the disappointing ending came in the first round of the playoffs. It was also the farewell to Brendan Shanahan after ten successful years in Detroit.
In the summer of 2006, Shanahan decided to leave Detroit to start over with another team. He was on the verge of signing a deal with the Montréal Canadiens when he received an offer from the New York Rangers to sign a four-million-dollar one-year deal. In his first game for the Rangers, he scored twice and was only the 15th player to reach 600 NHL goals. Over the course of the season, he was among the broader circle of candidates for the Maurice Richard Trophy , which is awarded to the top scorer, but his hit rate has not been consistent enough to keep up with the best. At the end of February 2007 he suffered a severe concussion in the game against the Philadelphia Flyers when he collided with opponent Mike Knuble and had to be carried off the ice. After a month he was able to return to the team. At the end of the season he came back with 62 points in 67 games to a decent result and also in the playoffs he convinced with five goals, but the Rangers failed in the second round. With his 29 goals this season Shanahan reached the 20-goal mark for the 18th time in a row, which apart from him only Gordie Howe achieved.
In the summer of 2007 he received a new one-year contract from the Rangers, which was not extended after the expiry, because the Rangers could not lift the Canadian's salary demands at the beginning of the season. Therefore, on January 14, 2009, he signed a one-year contract with the New Jersey Devils, the team with which he began his NHL career in 1987. Shanahan, who was selected by the Devils as the second player in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft, signed a contract worth $ 800,000 for the entire season or about $ 400,000 for the remaining games.
The contract was extended for another year on August 5, 2009, so that Shanahan was in the Devils squad at the beginning of the 2009/10 season . After various new signings over the summer, however, he only played a subordinate role, whereupon he left the team on October 1st - just before the start of the season - at his own request. On November 17, 2009, the Canadian finally announced his retirement from ice hockey.
Functionary career
In December 2009, Shanahan accepted the NHL's offer to serve as the NHL Vice President, Hockey and Business Development. On June 1, 2011, he succeeded Colin Campbell as NHL Senior Vice President. In this role he had to decide on player bans following illegal actions. Most of the time, he posted videos on the official NHL website, in which he explained in what way a rule violation existed (or not existed) and justified the duration of the ban.
On April 11, 2014, Shanahan was introduced as the new president and alternate governor of the Toronto Maple Leafs . At the same time, the NHL announced that Stéphane Quintal is taking over the post of chief criminal judge.
