Stéphane Yvon Quintal (born October 22, 1968 in Boucherville , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current official who played 1089 games for the Boston Bruins , St. Louis Blues , Winnipeg Jets in the course of his active career between 1984 and 2005 , Canadiens de Montréal , New York Rangers and Chicago Blackhawks in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . Between September 2014 and September 2017 he was Senior Vice President of Player Safety at the National Hockey League.
Career
Quintal played during his junior years between 1985 and 1988 first for the Bisons de Granby in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . During this time he was selected in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft in 14th place by the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League. During the 1987/88 season, the defender moved within the LHJMQ to the title contender Olympiques de Hull , with whom he was able to win the championship at the end of the season and then took part in the Memorial Cup .
For the 1988/89 season, the French-Canadian moved to the professional camp and played in the following four years for the Bruins in the NHL and their farm team , the Maine Mariners , in the American Hockey League . During this time, however, Quintal was never able to earn a permanent place in the Boston squad. It was not until the 1991/92 season that he no longer had to make his way into the minor league , but was transferred from the Bruins with Craig Janney to the St. Louis Blues, who in return gave Adam Oates to Boston. With the Blues, however, Quintal did not settle down for long, as they sent him to the Winnipeg Jets together with Nelson Emerson in September 1993 so that they could secure the services of Phil Housley . Quintal's time with the jets was also short-lived at two years old. In July 1995, the Canadiens de Montréal gave a second-round vote in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft to bring the defender close to his home again.
In Montréal, Quintal went on the ice for the Canadiens for four years and set a career record with 27 points scorer in the 1998/99 season . In July 1999 he finally signed a contract as a free agent with the New York Rangers , who put him on the waiver list before the 2000/01 season . From there, the Chicago Blackhawks secured the services of the defender. The time in Chicago lasted only one season, as he returned to the Canadiens de Montréal as part of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft for a four-round suffrage. After another three years there, he moved to the Los Angeles Kings , for which he never ran due to the lockout and the complete failure of the 2004/05 NHL season. Quintal spent part of the 2004/05 season at Asiago Hockey in the Italian Serie A1 before officially ending his active career on August 22, 2005 at the age of 36.
On September 8, 2014, Quintal was named Senior Vice President of Player Safety for the National Hockey League, having held the position on an interim basis since April . He replaced Brendan Shanahan , with whom he had been working in this department since the beginning of the 2011/12 season and who had fundamentally built and developed it. He held this position for a total of three seasons through September 2017, before stepping down from his post and handing the office over to George Parros .
International
Quintal only represented his home country at the 1999 World Cup in Norway . He was used in all ten tournament games of the Canadians and scored five points. The team took fourth place at the end of the tournament.
