Nelson Donald Emerson (born August 17, 1967 in Hamilton , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and coach and current official who played 811 games for the St. Louis Blues , Winnipeg Jets during his playing career between 1986 and 2002 , Hartford Whalers , Carolina Hurricanes , Chicago Blackhawks , Ottawa Senators , Atlanta Thrashers and Los Angeles Kings on the right winger position of the National Hockey League . Emerson celebrated his greatest career success in the jersey of the Canadian national team by winning the gold medal at the 1994 World Cup .

Career

Nelson Emerson began his career as a hockey player at Bowling Green State University , which he attended from 1986 to 1990, while he played parallel for their ice hockey team in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association . There he received numerous individual awards. As a junior player, he was selected in the third round of the 1985 NHL Entry Draft as the 44th player of the St. Louis Blues . For their farm team Peoria Rivermen from the International Hockey League , he made his professional ice hockey debut towards the end of the 1989/90 season . In the following season , the winger won the Turner Cup with Peoria . He himself was awarded the Garry F. Longman Memorial Trophy as Rookie of the Year of the IHL and was elected to the league's first All-Star Team. In parallel, he came to his first four appearances in the National Hockey League for the St. Louis Blues, in which he had a regular place in the NHL from 1991 to 1993.

In September 1993 Emerson was transferred to the Winnipeg Jets together with Stéphane Quintal in exchange for Phil Housley within the NHL , where he spent the following two years. He then stayed with the Hartford Whalers for two seasons . When these were relocated in 1997, he initially ran for their successor team, the Carolina Hurricanes , before he was given to the Chicago Blackhawks in December 1998 in exchange for Paul Coffey . Before the end of the season, however, another change followed. In exchange for Chris Murray he was given to the Ottawa Senators , for which he only played a total of seven games. In August 1999, the Canadian signed a contract as a free agent with the Atlanta Thrashers , for which he scored 33 scorer points in 58 games, including 14 goals. In March 1999, shortly before the end of the trade deadline, he switched to the Los Angeles Kings together with Kelly Buchberger in exchange for Donald Audette and František Kaberle . With the Kings he ended his active career at the age of 35 following the 2001/02 season .

From 2006 to 2009 Emerson was an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Kings in the NHL. Since then he has been their Director of Player Development .

International

For Canada , Emerson took part in the 1992 , 1994 and 1998 World Championships . At the 1994 World Cup, he and his team won the gold medal. He himself contributed to winning the title with two goals and two assists in eight games.
