Paul Douglas Coffey (born June 1, 1961 in Weston , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . Between 1980 and 2000 he played over 1,400 games for nine different teams in the National Hockey League and recorded over 1,500 scorer points. He spent most of his career with the Edmonton Oilers , with whom he won the Stanley Cup in 1984 , 1985 and 1987 as well as a fourth time in 1991 with the Pittsburgh Penguins . With the Canadian national team he took part in the Canada Cup three times and won the gold medal there with the team.

Coffey is considered one of the best defensive players of all time and to this day holds a number of NHL records in his position. After Denis Potvin , he became the second defender who reached the mark of 1000 scorer points , while to this day he was only surpassed by Ray Bourque in goals scored (396), assists (1135) and points (1531) . He was also honored three times with the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the best defensive player in the league, was considered several times in the NHL All-Star Team and was finally inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004 .

Career

Paul Coffey was drawn sixth in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers . Coffey played the first seven years with the then very successful Edmonton Oilers, with whom he won the Stanley Cup three times (1984, 1985 and 1987). In 1987 Coffey was traded for Craig Simpson and Chris Joseph to the Pittsburgh Penguins , where he played for the next 4½ years and in 1991 was also able to win the Stanley Cup. Then he moved to the Los Angeles Kings , where he stayed for almost 2 years. Then he switched to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Jimmy Carson and played here again for 4½ years. After this time he was with the Hartford Whalers for a year . He played for the Philadelphia Flyers for the next two years . After half a season with the Chicago Blackhawks , he moved to Carolina and stayed there for 1½ years. He spent the last six months of his playing career with the Boston Bruins .

In 2000 Paul Coffey announced his retirement from active, professional sports. The highlight of his career was the 1985/86 season in which he scored 138 points. Paul Coffey won the Norris Trophy three times for best defensive player in the league (1985, 1986, 1995).

He resigned with the most points scorer as a defender within the playoffs in the history of the NHL and is in the scorer rating within the regular season behind Ray Bourque in second place. One of the greatest defensive players of all time - best known for his ice skating technique and speed - Paul Coffey was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004 . In addition , the Oilers blocked his jersey number 7 in 2005.

With the Canadian national team , Coffey won the Canada Cup three times - in 1984 , 1987 and 1991 .
