The Canada Cup 1987 ( French Coupe Canada 1987 ) was the fourth edition of the competition of the same name . It was held from August 28 to September 15, 1987 in the North American cities of Calgary , Halifax , Hamilton , Hartford , Montréal , Regina and Sydney . The International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF , the North American Professional League National Hockey League and the Canadian Ice Hockey Association Canadian Hockey Association supported the competition.

Six teams took part in the fourth edition of the competition. Canada won the tournament by two final series victories against the USSR , which won the first game. The second game in the series, which Canada won 6-5 in the second extra time , is considered one of the best ice hockey games of all time. The tournament's best scorer was the Canadian Wayne Gretzky with three goals and 21 points. He shone in a storm row with Mario Lemieux , who scored eleven goals and 18 points. Gretzky was also voted Most Valuable Player .

mode

The six teams played the placements in the preliminary round in a single round, so that each team played five games. There were two points for a win, and one point each for a draw. The four teams with the highest points in the group of six qualified for the semi-finals.

The two semi-finals were decided in the knockout system , the winners of the semi-finals moved into the final. In contrast, the final - as in 1976 and 1984 - was played in the "best-of-three" mode.
