The International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF , the North American Professional League National Hockey League and the Canadian Ice Hockey Association Canadian Hockey Association supported the competition.
Six teams took part in the fourth edition of the competition. Canada won the tournament by two final series victories against the USSR , which won the first game. The tournament's best scorer was the Canadian Wayne Gretzky with three goals and 21 points. He shone in a storm row with Mario Lemieux , who scored eleven goals and 18 points. Gretzky was also voted Most Valuable Player .
