Career

Svetlow played at HK Dynamo Moscow during his career . In the 1988 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the ninth round in 180th place by the New Jersey Devils . Due to the political situation in what was then the Soviet Union , he never played in the National Hockey League . Later, for the 1990/91 season, he moved to the German 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga for EC Ratingen . In total, he scored 137 goals in 372 games in the Soviet league . So he was appointed to the team of the Soviet national ice hockey team. On September 3, 1980 he was in a game against Finland for the first time for the Sbornaja on the ice. His international career was crowned with a gold medal at the 1988 Winter Olympics . For the national team, he scored 57 goals in 154 international matches. On May 20, 1988, he played his last international match. In 1988 he was inducted into the " Russian Hockey Hall of Fame ". In 1996/97 he was a trainer at EV Landshut and from 1999 to 2004 at ESV Kaufbeuren .

Before the 2008/09 season Swetlow took over the head coach of the ice pirates Crimmitschau from the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga . Shortly before the start of the season in early September, however, he reported unable to work due to a herniated disc and then resigned from his position. A few days later it became known that the injury had only been faked and that he had accepted an offer as an assistant coach at HK Lada Tolyatti from the Continental Hockey League . In February 2010 he was promoted to head coach in Tolyatti. In September 2010 he took over the post of head coach at KHL participant Amur Khabarovsk and coached the club until April 2011.

In November 2012 he was introduced as the new head coach of Atlant Mytishchi , after neither Janne Karlsson nor Alexander Smirnow had been successful. After a series of defeats at the beginning of the 2013/14 season, Svetlow was dismissed along with Alexander Nesterow and assistant coach Alexei Kudaschow was promoted to head coach.

From December 2013 he looked after Admiral Vladivostok from the KHL as head coach before he was committed to the following season in the same position by HK Lada Tolyatti . After a disappointing start to the 2015/16 season, he was dismissed in September 2015 and replaced by the previous assistant coach Artis Ābols .

Svetlow has been head coach at Admiral Vladivostok again since 2018.
