Alexander Evgenjewitsch Smirnow ( Russian Александр Евгеньевич Смирнов ; born August 17, 1964 in Voskressensk , Russian SFSR ) is a former Russian ice hockey player and current coach .
Career
Alexander Smirnov began his career as a hockey player in his hometown with Chimik Voskressensk , for which he was active from 1982 to 1992 in the Vysschaya League , the highest Soviet league. The defender then played for TPS Turku in the Finnish SM-liiga for three years . With the team he won the Finnish championship title in the 1992/93 and 1994/95 seasons . He also won the European Ice Hockey Cup with TPS in 1993 . He spent the 1995/96 season at Kapfenberger SV in the Austrian ice hockey league . From 1996 to 2001 he was in the squad of the Storhamar Dragons in the highest Norwegian league . With the team he won the national championship title in the 1996/97 and 1999/2000 seasons . From 2000 to 2004 he ran again for his hometown club Chimik Voskressensk in the Wysschaja Liga, the second Russian division, before returning to the Storhamar Dragons. With the Dragons he won the Norwegian championship again in the 2003/04 season . Two years later he ended his active career with the Norwegians at the age of 42.
For the 2007/08 season Smirnow took over as head coach of the Storhamar Dragons, with whom he was Norwegian champion straight away. After another year with the Dragons, he returned to his Russian homeland for the 2009/10 season , where he received a contract as an assistant coach at Severstal Tscherepowez from the Continental Hockey League . In the following season he worked as head coach for Sewerstal. The former national player began the 2011/12 season as head coach at KHL participant Neftechimik Nizhnekamsk , but resigned there in November 2011. A month later he became an assistant coach at Severstal Tscherepowez. In the 2012/13 season Smirnow initially worked as an assistant to the Swede Janne Karlsson at Atlant Moskowskaja Oblast , whom he replaced as head coach after his dismissal on October 20, 2012. After the commitment of Sergei Svetlov in November of the same year, Smirnow moved back into the second tier and was an assistant coach at Atlant until the end of the 2013/14 season.
For the 2014/15 season he was hired again by the Storhamar Dragons as head coach and worked there until 2016 in this position. Between 2016 and 2019, Smirnov was an assistant coach at Ak Bars Kazan .
International
For Russia , Smirnov took part in the World Championships in 1993 , 1994 , 1995 and 1996 . He was also in his country's squad at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer . At the 1993 World Cup he won the gold medal with his team.
