Veselin Šljivančanin ( Serbian - Cyrillic Веселин Шљиванчанин * 13. June 1953 in Pavez, community Žabljak , Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia ) is a former officer in the Yugoslav People's Army , which in 2009 by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia as a war criminal to 17 years imprisonment was convicted.

Military career

He took part in the Battle of Vukovar , which brought him a promotion after a successful storm in 1991.

War crimes trial

He was charged with crimes against humanity before the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) . He was arrested and extradited in Serbia on June 13, 2003 , although he is a Serbian citizen and could only be tried in Serbia under current Serbian law. Since he was a respected soldier in Serbia, riots broke out when he was arrested.

In September 2007 he was sentenced by the tribunal to five years imprisonment for complicity and failure to provide assistance. Since he more than four years in detention was, the court released him in December 2007 from custody. The judges dismissed charges that he was a member of a conspiracy aimed at murdering or evicting Croatians and alleging that civilians were among those murdered for lack of evidence. In May 2009, the appeals tribunal revised the previous decision. Veselin Šljivančanin was sentenced to 17 years in prison on the basis of the evidence so far.

Despite a government decision, Serbia canceled its participation with two officers in the NATO maneuver in Georgia in May 2009 at short notice.
