Michel Bernard Goulet (born April 21, 1960 in Péribonka , Québec ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who played for the Québec Nordiques and Chicago Blackhawks in the National Hockey League and the Birmingham Bulls in the World Hockey Association from 1979 to 1994 .
Career
After playing as a junior with the Québec Remparts in the QMJHL , he began his professional career in the WHA with the Birmingham Bulls . From a sporting point of view, this did not cause him any problems, but Goulet, who grew up in the province of Québec, spoke hardly any English and initially found it difficult to cope with his French in the deep south of Alabama. In the 1979 NHL Entry Draft , the Québec Nordiques brought him back home as No. 20. Goulet was henceforth one of the most consistent goalscorers in the NHL. Except for his last season, he always scored more than 20 goals. From the 1981/82 season on, he exceeded the 40 goal mark seven times in a row. Despite the great aggressiveness in his game, the left winger always remained fair. For years he was one of the pillars and top scorers of the Nordiques. It was a great experience for him to take part in the Rendez-vous '87 with the Canadian national team, which was played in two games against the USSR instead of the NHL All-Star Games . He was also able to help defend the title at the Canada Cup that year . When the team in Québec was rebuilt at the end of the 1980s to save costs, the time had come for him to leave the Nordiques at the end of the 1989/90 season .
At the Chicago Blackhawks he had to play a much more defensive role than before in Quebec. In the summer of 1990 he was diagnosed with heart problems, but a complicated operation was able to ensure the continuation of his career. With a hat trick against Minnesota on February 23, 1991, he became the 30th player to score his 1,000 scorer point in the NHL.
On March 16, 1994, he crashed into the gang in a game for the Montréal Canadiens and suffered a severe head injury that forced him to retire. Exactly one year after this accident, his jersey with the number 16 was hung under the roof in Québec and the number has not been assigned by the team since then. However, in 1995 the team moved from Quebec to Denver under the name Colorado Avalanche , which again assigned the number.
In 1998 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
In the following years Goulet was active in the organization of the Avalanche, when the team won the Stanley Cup in 1996 and 2001 , his name was immortalized on the trophy.
