Kelly Stephen Hrudey (born January 13, 1961 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper . During his career he played for the New York Islanders , Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League .

Career

Hrudey first played three years from 1978 to 1981 with the Medicine Hat Tigers in the Western Hockey League . In his last season there he was elected to the league's Second All-Star Team. Previously, the New York Islanders had already pulled him in the second round of the 1980 NHL Entry Draft in 38th position.

After the end of the 1980/81 season, however, the Canadian did not move to the NHL , but initially went to the Central Hockey League , where he guarded the gate of the Indianapolis Checkers until the 1983/84 season. During this time, Hrudey was elected twice to the First All-Star Team, twice received the Terry Sawchuk Trophy , which honors the goalkeeper with the lowest number of goals conceded, and was awarded once each with the Tommy Ivan Trophy for the best player in the league and the Max McNab Trophy for awarded the best player of the playoffs.

During the 1983/84 season , the Islanders brought him to the NHL and he was used in twelve games. This was followed by the nomination to the squad of the Canadian national team for the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo , but due to his professional contract with an NHL team, the American association protested against the use of Hrudey, whereupon he did not participate. As a result, the goalkeeper established himself in the New York squad and played there until the 1988/89 season . He set a record in the course of the playoffs of the 1986/87 season by holding a total of 73 shots in the seventh game of the Wales Conference quarter-final against the Washington Capitals , the so-called Easter Epic .

In February 1989, Hrudey was transferred to California to the Los Angeles Kings and played there seven full seasons, including with Wayne Gretzky . In the 1992/93 season , the Kings even reached the Stanley Cup final series, but were defeated by the Montréal Canadiens in five games. For the 1996/97 season he signed a two-year contract with the San Jose Sharks and let his career end there, which he ended in the summer of 1998.

Then Hrudey began as a sports commentator for the CBC on the show Hockey Night in Canada to analyze the games of the NHL and was awarded a Gemini Award for best studio analyst in 2007 .
