Career as a player

Raimo Summanen began his career as a hockey player with Reipas Lahti , for which he made his debut in the SM-liiga , Finland's top division, in the 1981/82 season . He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1982 in the sixth round as a total of 125 players by the Edmonton Oilers . Initially, however, the attacker played two more years in Finland with Ilves Tampere before he made his debut in the National Hockey League for the Oilers towards the end of the 1983/84 season . In his three years with the Oilers he won the Stanley Cup with the team in 1984 and 1985 , but Summanen did not play enough games in both seasons to be officially immortalized on the trophy. Towards the end of the 1986/87 season Summanen was given to the Vancouver Canucks , where he could not prevail, so that he was only 19 times in the NHL on the ice in the year and a half in Vancouver.

In 1988 Summanen returned to his Finnish homeland, where he signed a contract with his ex-club Ilves Tampere, for which he was active for the following four seasons, interrupted by one year, with their league rivals HPK Hämeenlinna . In the 1992/93 season Summanen was Finnish champion for the first time with TPS Turku . He was able to repeat this success in the following season with Jokerit Helsinki . However, he ended the 1993/94 season at SC Bern in the Swiss National League A , his only stop in other European countries, before ending his active career in 1995 at TPS Turku. For Summanen this was the third championship title in a row in Finland and the second with Turku.
