The games of the 52nd Ice Hockey World Championships and 63rd Men's Ice Hockey European Championships in 1987 took place in Austria , Italy , Denmark and Australia . A total of 28 teams took part in these world championships, a new record. The teams from New Zealand and Hong Kong were there for the first time. This was accompanied by the introduction of the D World Championship, which took place for the first time with 4 teams and was held in a double round. There was also a new record result at these world championships. In the D group, Australia defeated New Zealand's team with 58-0 goals. This exceeded the previous record of the 1949 World Cup with the result of the game Canada against Denmark 47-0.
A world championship
Tournament course
At the A-WM in Vienna in the Donauparkhalle (Vienna) and the Wiener Stadthalle , the decisions and discussions at the tables of the world ice hockey association were often more in the foreground than the sporting events. The subject of the discussions was the use of the Polish-born player Miroslav Sikora in the German national team. This player had played a few games in Poland's junior national team in his youth in 1976, but then fled to Germany in 1977 and gained German citizenship in 1986 . Due to the difficult legal situation, the DEB asked before Sikora was used at the World Cup at the IIHF whether Sikora could be used for the German national team at the World Cup and received a positive decision from the world association. But after the successful start of the German team with wins against Finland (3: 1) and Canada (5: 3), the affected countries, supported by Switzerland, which hoped for advantages in the relegation battle, protested with the reason that Miroslav Sikora have already played for the Polish junior national team and can no longer play for Germany. The IIHF initially accepted the protest and evaluated the two games with the result of 0: 5 goals each. The DEB was able to get the points back with an injunction at the Vienna Regional Court. The game permission of the IIHF incl. Charges communication from the DEB and could show also received increasing support from other nations, especially by Sweden, which had landed in a reaction to the decision on the basis of point gains of Canadians and Finns in the relegation round. Ultimately, the validity of the sporting results remained. The German team, however, was thrown out of step by the harassment and lost the decisive game for a place in the final round against the USA - without a doubt also because of the absence of Sikora, who was suspended in this game without legal basis - as it later turned out . In retrospect it became clear that the Finns had planned the protest against the use of Sikora exactly in the event that they would lose again, as in two preparation games against Germany. Otherwise they could have submitted the protest before the game.
In addition, there was another doping case at this World Cup. The American Scott Young tested positive after the game against Czechoslovakia (2-4). The game was then rated 2-0 points and 4-0 goals for Czechoslovakia.
The Swedes were surprisingly new world champions. Decisions at the green table had previously threatened to crash into the relegation round. However, like the Czechoslovaks two years earlier, they benefited from the host mode. If the points from the preliminary round had been included, the Soviet team would once again have become world champions in a sovereign manner. As it was, however, the cards were reshuffled in the final round, so that in the end Sweden was ahead of the game due to the better goal difference compared to the USSR. A key role was played by the Canadians, who first took an important point away from the USSR with a goalless draw and were then formally outclassed by Sweden. For them, the fourth world championship title was considered to be the most valuable sporting event, as it was the first time that the entire world elite could triumph here. As a consolation, the Soviet team was left with the 25th European Championship title , which was awarded after the preliminary round.
