Lawrence Thomas Murphy (born March 8, 1961 in Scarborough , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 1830 games for the Los Angeles Kings , Washington Capitals , Minnesota North Stars , Pittsburgh Penguins , Toronto during his playing career between 1978 and 2001 Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings played in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . Murphy, who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004 and one of the best defenders of his generation, has won the Stanley Cup four times over the course of his 21-year NHL career - twice each with Pittsburgh and Detroit. In addition, he was appointed three times to the NHL Second All-Star Team and took part in as many All-Star Games .
Career
After two years in the Ontario Hockey League with the Peterborough Petes , Larry Murphy was selected in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft in the first round as fourth overall by the Los Angeles Kings . In his rookie season 1980/81 , he set two to this day NHL records for rookie defenders with 60 assists and 76 scorer points . During his 21 years in the National Hockey League , he completed 1,615 regular season games. After his career ended in 2001, that was also a record, but it was exceeded in the course of the 2003/04 season . He won the Stanley Cup twice with the Pittsburgh Penguins ( 1991 and 1992 ) and twice with the Detroit Red Wings ( 1997 and 1998 ) . In 2004 the right-shooter was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame . He has scored 1,216 points throughout his career, making him the fourth best defender of all time.
