Brian Robert Lawton (born June 29, 1965 in New Brunswick , New Jersey ) is a former American ice hockey player and official who played 494 games for the Minnesota North Stars , New York Rangers between 1983 and 1993 , Hartford Whalers , Nordiques de Québec , Boston Bruins and San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League on the position of left winger . Lawton was selected in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft as the overall first by the Minnesota North Stars, making it the first American and the first player from a North American high school to be drawn in first position.

Career

Lawton played for the Mount Saint Charles Academy high school team between 1981 and 1983 during his junior years . He also appeared in 1983 with the United States U20 national team at the Junior World Cup . After completing the 1982/83 season, the striker was selected in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft as the overall first by the Minnesota North Stars from the National Hockey League . It made him the first American and the first high school player to be drawn first in the draft.

In his rookie season 1983/84 the American reached 31 points scorer with the North Stars . After a weaker second season, he brought it to 35 to 45 points in each of the following three seasons. For the 1988/89 season, however , he was given in a total of seven players comprehensive transfer business to the New York Rangers . Already in the course of the game year he moved again, this time to the Hartford Whalers . The following season, which he began again in Hartford, also brought him a brief stint with the Nordiques de Québec , before he played eight games for the Boston Bruins .

It followed a year in the International Hockey League with the Phoenix Roadrunners , before the new team of the San Jose Sharks secured his services for the 1991/92 season . He was with the Sharks for two years, but was also repeatedly used in the IHL farm teams Kansas City Blades and Cincinnati Cyclones . In 1993 he ended his career and became a player's agent. He founded his own agency, Lawton Sport and Financial , which he ran with Mike Liut . After selling his agency to Octagon Athlete Represantation in 1998, Lawton became chairman of the company's ice hockey division. Sergei Fyodorov was one of his clients .

In the summer of 2008, he left Octagon and became vice president of the Tampa Bay Lightning ice hockey business before being named general manager just months later. After a change of ownership, Lawton was released in April 2010 along with head coach Rick Tocchet .
