Michael McHugh (born August 16, 1965 in Bowdoin , Maine ) is a retired American ice hockey player . During his career he played for the Minnesota North Stars and San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League .

Career

McHugh played four years from 1984 to 1988 at the University of Maine in Hockey East of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In his final year there, the left winger was voted Best Player of the Year and a First All-Star Team. As a result, he was selected in the first position of the Minnesota North Stars in the 1988 NHL Supplemental Draft .

At the beginning of the 1988/89 season , McHugh signed a contract in Minnesota. In the following three years, however, he was mainly used with the Kalamazoo Wings , the farm team of the North Stars from the International Hockey League , and ran in only twelve games in the NHL. As part of the 1991 NHL Dispersal Draft , the American was selected by the newly founded San Jose Sharks. There McHugh was eight times in the squad of the NHL team and scored his only NHL point with one goal before he was transferred to the Hartford Whalers for Paul Fenton in October 1991 . This in turn used him exclusively in their farm team, the Springfield Indians from the American Hockey League . For the 1993/94 season McHugh moved within the AHL to the Hershey Bears , with whom he could win the Calder Cup , the championship of the AHL, at the end of the 1996/97 season . He was also honored with the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy , which honors the Most Valuable Player of the Playoffs . After the 1997/98 season he ended his career.
