Pierre Julien Turgeon (born August 28, 1969 in Rouyn-Noranda , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach , who played 1403 games for the Buffalo Sabers , New York Islanders , Canadiens between 1985 and 2007 de Montréal , St. Louis Blues , Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche in the National Hockey League on the position of the center .
Career
In his time as a junior Turgeon played with the Granby Bisons in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . After two seasons with more than 100 scorer points and some appearances in the Canadian national team, he was brought in first by the Buffalo Sabers in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft .
The Sabers brought him to the NHL the following year. Here he needed a season to get used to the level of the NHL, but in his second and especially in his third season in 1989/90 he had also proven his exceptional class in the NHL with 106 points. Turgeon's strengths lay in building up the game, but the way he played did not suit his fast attack partner Alexander Mogilny . Therefore, the Sabers took the opportunity at the end of 1991 and gave Pierre to the New York Islanders in exchange for Pat LaFontaine .
With the Islanders, he completed his best season in the 1992/93 season. With 132 points he led the Islanders into the playoffs. After he scored the opening goal in the last game of the first play-off round, he was checked from behind by Dale Hunter and broke his collarbone. Hunter was banned for 21 games (then record). The Islanders hoped to progress, but Ray Ferraro and Steve Thomas got the team through the second round. For the conference final against the Montréal Canadiens , Turgeon returned to the ice, but was too restricted to prevail against the eventual Stanley Cup winner.
A year and a half later he was transferred to the Montréal Canadiens and played there until the end of 1997. Then his path led him on to the St. Louis Blues . The former 100 point scorer stayed here for over four years, but he couldn't get close to the 100 point mark because he hadn't had a full playing time in the 4 years. In the 2000/01 season he found his old strength back and scored 82 points in 79 games.
From the 2001/02 season he wore the jersey of the Dallas Stars for three years . After the strike season 2004/05 , in which he paused, he went on the hunt for points for the Colorado Avalanche and scored his 500th goal there as the 34th player in the NHL. In the 2006/07 season he was plagued by injuries and only made 17 appearances. He finally ended his career in September 2007, before he was hired as assistant coach by the Los Angeles Kings for the 2017/18 season after ten years away from ice hockey . However, he only held this position for one season.
