Émile Joseph "Butch" Bouchard ( CM , CQ ; born September 4, 1919 in Montreal , Québec ; † April 14, 2012 in Longueuil , Québec) was a Canadian ice hockey player who played 898 games during his active career between 1937 and 1956 for the Canadiens de Montréal in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . Bouchard, who is considered one of the best defensive players of the late 1940s and early 1950s, won the Stanley Cup four times with the Canadiens de Montréal during his 15 seasons in the NHL . He was also nominated four times to one of the NHL All-Star Teams and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1966. His son Pierre Bouchard was also a professional ice hockey player and won five Stanley Cups with the Canadiens.

Career

The 1.88 m tall defender was initially on the ice for the Maple Leafs de Verdun in the QSHL and the Providence Reds in the American Hockey League before joining the Canadiens de Montréal for the 1941/42 season .

For Montreal, the right-handed shooter completed a total of 898 NHL missions by the 1955/56 season , achieving 60 goals and 166 assists . From 1948 to the end of his career in 1956 , he was also the captain of the Canadian franchise , with which Bouchard won the Stanley Cup four times ( 1944 , 1946 , 1953 , 1956 ).

In 1966, Emile Bouchard was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame , and the Trophée Émile Bouchard of the Québec Major Junior Hockey League is named after him. He is also the father of former NHL defender Pierre Bouchard .

His shirt number 3 was banned from the club on December 4, 2009, on the day of the Canadiens 100th birthday, before the game against the Boston Bruins , after a formal ceremony. Émile Bouchard died on April 14, 2012 in Longueuil at the age of 92.
