Äbdischämil Kärimuly Nurpeissow (Russian form of the name Abdischamil Karimowitsch Nurpeissow ; born October 22, 1924 in Aral ) is a Kazakh writer and PEN president.

Äbdischämil Nurpeissow was born into a Kazakh fishing family on the Aral Sea. He fought in the Red Army near Stalingrad and in the Baltic region . For his novel Kurland , in which he processed these experiences, he received a literary prize from the Kazakh Soviet Republic . Nurpeissow studied at the Institute of Literature in Moscow and translated works by Chekhov and Gorky into Kazakh .

In a trilogy he writes about the conflicts between poor and rich Kazakhs in the period from the First World War to the end of the civil war in 1920. It consists of the volumes " Morgendämmerung " (German 1961), Irrwege (German 1964) and Untergang (German . 1970). In one edition of this trilogy, a first version of the novel The Dying Lake was accommodated without a title. The Moscow censors had put this work on the index, so the Kazakh publisher used this trick.

The first German publication of the novel Der dying See was published in 1988 by Aufbau-Verlag Berlin and Weimar (GDR), and a licensed edition by Bertelsmann followed in 1989.

In 2005 the novel was published in a completely revised two-part version. This novel is about the tragedy of the Aral Sea in Central Asia and the human conflicts that are connected with it. It shows the fishermen's struggle for existence and the headlessness of science and politics in this drama. This is sure to be one of the great works of Kazakh literature. The publication in Great Britain and Germany took place in 2006, a film version is being prepared. Nurpeissow runs the literary magazine »Juldyz« and is president of the Kazakh PEN club.
