Antonio Cagnoni (born February 8, 1828 in Godiasco , ( province of Pavia ), † April 30, 1896 in Bergamo ) was an Italian opera composer of the 19th century.

Life

Antonio Cagnoni studied with Felice Moretti (1791–1863), also known as "Padre Davide da Bergamo", in Voghera and from 1842 to 1847 at the Milan Conservatory.

His most important works include the operas Don Bucefalo (1847), Claudia , Giralda , Michele Perrin , Il capriccio di donna and Papà Martin . Cagnoni's opera Re Lear , completed in 1895, was no longer performed during the composer's lifetime because of his death in 1896. The world premiere of the four-act work took place in 2009 at the “Festival della Valle d'Itria” in Martina Franca . Cagnoni also took part in the Messa per Rossini , which Giuseppe Verdi suggested to the death of Rossini , and composed Quid sum miser for it . His most important religious work is his Requiem from 1888.
