Sprague "Peg" Cleghorn (born March 11, 1890 in Montreal , Québec ; † July 11, 1956 ibid) was a Canadian ice hockey player and coach who worked for the Ottawa Senators , Montréal Canadiens , Toronto St. Pats and Boston from 1918 to 1928 Bruins played in the National Hockey League .
Career
He was 27 when the NHL entered its first season, and Cleghorn was one of the most noticeable players of the early years. He was an excellent player, but also a feared predator. Together with his brother Odie , he ensured in a 1922 game against Ottawa that three Senators players had to leave the ice seriously injured. For the next game in Ottawa he had to be smuggled into the hall through a back entrance. With the Ottawa Senators in 1920 and 1921 and as captain of the Montréal Canadiens in 1924, he won the Stanley Cup three times . During the festivities, they and their manager Léo Dandurand lead into his house. Their car broke down on the way there. Sprague put the cup on the sidewalk. When they later turned up at Dandurand's house, it was noticed that they were missing the cup. Fortunately, when they returned it was standing where Cleghorn had put it.
In 1931 he trained the Montreal Maroons . In 1958 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
