5th National Hockey League All-Star Game
The 5th National Hockey League All-Star Game was played on October 9, 1951 in Toronto , Canada . The game took place at Maple Leaf Gardens , the home of the Toronto Maple Leafs . The game of the best NHL players ended in a 2-2 draw. For the first time an All-Star Game was broadcast on the radio.
New format
The format was introduced mainly due to the clear 7-1 win by Stanley Cup winner Detroit Red Wings from last year against the All-Star team. But the 2-2 draw between the two All-Star teams also caused criticism and the introduction of overtime was demanded.
The first All-Star team consisted of players from American teams, while the second was mainly made up of players from Toronto and Montréal. For this reason, the jerseys of the first team were red, those of the second team were white.
The game took place in a subdued mood, as Bill Barilko of the Toronto Maple Leafs , who would have played on the second All-Star team, disappeared in a plane crash shortly before.
